• Kuwait orders 150 Dodge Charger police cars

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Government/Legal , Chrysler, LLC. , Dodge , Police/Emergency Click above for high-res gallery of the Kuwaiti cop-issue Chargers Choosing them for their portrayed image of "strength and power," officials in Kuwait have ordered 150 Dodge Chargers to be modified as police vehicles . As the Charger is the leading volume vehicle for Chrysler LLC in the Middle East, the choice doesn't come as much of a surprise. Delivery of the cop cars, however, isn't expected to take place for another couple months. In the meantime, the lot of them are heading to Canfield Equipment Service in Michigan where they'll be fitted for their new Kuwaiti roles in traffic, security, and emergency response. ( Here's hoping none of our readers get a chance to check them out from the back seat once they're in service ). • 2009 Dodge Journey recalled for possible engine fires

Filed under: Government/Legal , Safety , Crossovers/CUVs , Chrysler , Dodge Click above for high-res gallery of the 2008 Dodge Journey Chrysler is recalling 6,692 Dodge Journey crossover vehicles equipped with its 3.5L V6 engine due to a wiring harness problem that could potentially result in an engine fire. NHTSA says the issue can occur when the wiring harness becomes dislodged and makes contact with the transaxle mount. Effected vehicles need to be checked out at your local Dodge dealer where the wiring harness will be inspected for damage. If the harness is damaged it will be replaced, and all harnesses will be secured with a tie wrap to ensure the issue doesn't reoccur. Chrysler has known about the issue since mid-March, but no actual fires have been reported as of this time. The Journey recall is the second NHTSA action on a new vehicle this month, the Volkswagen Tiguan being the other, with each model having less than 7,000 units effected. Though nobody wants to see a time-consuming...
• Your tax dollars at work: Border guards hold up traffic to check out Challenger

Filed under: Coupes , Etc. , Government/Legal , Chrysler , Dodge Click above for high-res gallery of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Border_Guards_Halt_Traffic_to_Check_Out_Challenger'; If any of you were stuck in traffic trying to get through the Detroit Windsor tunnel late last week, we may now know why. There was no major international incident or terrorist crackdown happening. Apparently, Chrysler Canada CEO Reid Bigland grabbed a fresh-off-the-line Dodge Challenger SRT8 and headed over to Detroit from his office in Windsor, Ontario. Agents of the Customs and Border Protection Service decided they wanted to check out Chrysler's new muscle car. Several agents spent time going over the new Challenger and asking questions about it rather than processing travelers through the downtown Detroit border crossing point. Traffic quickly got backed up and according to Bigland there was about an hour delay by the time the agents let him proceed...
• California speeders beware, CHiPs getting new unmarked Chargers

Filed under: Etc. , Government/Legal , Dodge Drivers in California will need to start keeping their eyes peeled for a new profile as they cruise the freeways. The traditional Crown Vics have apparently been joined by a fleet of 88 new unmarked Dodge Chargers. The new cop cars were spotted at the Sacramento vehicle preparation facility that the California Highway Patrol uses to outfit new cars. Unlike the model that we recently drove , these are unlikely to draw much attention from onlookers before they pounce. Speaking of Dodge police vehicles, drivers traversing I-94 in the vicinity of Detroit Metro Airport should watch their velocity ,as police in that area have recently been spending an inordinate amount of time writing tickets. On the way to a meeting in Dearborn yesterday, there were four unmarked Dodges, including a pair of Magnums (one each in red and grey) and a pair of Chargers. Those Magnums have been in that same location three times in the past month. Gallery: Autoblog Garage...
• Dodging a tow truck in Glasgow, with a Ram

Filed under: Trucks/Pickups , Etc. , Euro , Government/Legal , Dodge Alan Love is a millionaire who apparently doesn't believe rules apply to him. Alan lives in Glasgow, Scotland and has a predilection for parking illegally. After getting his cars towed on numerous occasions he has come up with a novel way of avoiding that little problem: get a vehicle bigger than the tow trucks. In a country where high fuel prices cause most people to drive smaller cars, Glasgow authorities didn't have any tow trucks capable of removing Love's new three-ton Dodge Ram pickup. Love evidently pays his £150 in parking tickets, but still believes he should be able to park wherever he feels like. Now that the escalation is continuing with the Glasgow City Council buying two new tow trucks capable of towing the Ram, the question is what will Love do next, buy one of these? • Dodge Challenger SRT-8 actually stickers at $40,095

Filed under: Car Buying , Coupes , Government/Legal , Dodge One of our readers pointed us to this page over at Dodge's website that contradicted our earlier post about the 2008 Challenger SRT-8's pricing, which was originally announced at $37,995 (including the $675 destination charge). We realize that inflation is a cruel mistress, but a bump in the sticker to $40,095 left us scratching our heads. A few emails back and forth between the people at Chrysler revealed that the SRT-8 was slapped with a $2100 gas-guzzler penalty that accounted for the discrepancy in price. Not a real surprise considering the 425 hp 6.1-liter HEMI V8. As a comparison, however, the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 gets a $1300 consumption penalty , even with 75 more horses under the hood. A quick search over at fueleconomy.gov revealed that if Challenger SRT-8 owners are penalized $2100, that means that they'll also only be getting between 18.5 and 19.5 mpg in the combined cycle. We doubt that'll be a...
• Federal court overturns MPG standards for light trucks

Filed under: Trucks/Pickups , Government/Legal , Green , Chevrolet , Dodge , Ford , Toyota The federal government has gotten more interested in greenhouse gases, and as a result there has been a lot of tough talk concerning raised CAFE numbers. Much less time has been devoted to reducing CO2, which is the single largest contributor to global warming. Now that the spotlight is shining squarely on emissions, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals panel has thrown out the 2008-2011 CAFE rating for light trucks. The 2008-2011 changes represented the largest jump in fuel economy in the history of CAFE, with MPG going from 22.2 to 24, but with the growing problem of greenhouse gases, that obviously didn't go far enough for the courts. While better fuel economy and less harmful emissions coming from light trucks would be a welcome sight to all, changing the rules after 2008 trucks are already on the streets sounds a bit ridiculous. It isn't like automakers can easily change course for 2011...
