Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Coupes , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Cadillac , GM We've heard scads of rumors over the past year that General Motors plans to bring a Volt-based Cadillac to market, and it looks like we'll be seeing a concept of the new E-Flex Caddy at the Detroit Auto Show . According to a report by BusinessWeek , the two-door coupe concept will use the same range-extending EV drivetrain as the Chevrolet Volt, although there's no word on whether the Caddy concept will send power to the front or rear wheels. BW sources say that the vehicle is smaller than the CTS and will feature a bolder exterior design than the CTS coupe. We'll be on hand in Detroit beginning this Sunday to see the Caddivolt concept in person, if it decides to show up. Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green Unless you're trying to outrun a Corvette in a Fiesta , driving indoors is not typically recommended, what with the toxic fumes and all. Low-emissions vehicles may change that and the Detroit Auto Show 's organizers will illustrate it by converting Cobo Center's Michigan Hall into a green test track. Sponsored by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the MEDC EcoXperience will offer show-goers the chance to drive a variety of environmentally-friendly new vehicles around a forested 1/8-mile test track. The list of participating vehicles has yet to be confirmed, but it could include some six to twelve different (almost assuredly all American) vehicles, including the Chevy Equinox hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle. Public visitors will have the chance to put-put around the track at 10 mph with a professional co-pilot in between trees and waterfalls. And just in case the low- or zero-emissions vehicles manage to spew...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Euro , Green , Honda Click above for a gallery of the Euro-spec 2009 Honda Insight We're still six days away from the official unveiling of the 2009 Honda Insight at the Detroit Auto Show , but the crew at Carscoop just couldn't wait to release images of the European-spec hybrid ahead of its debut. The Euro model shown here won't differ too much from the U.S. version (we like our steering wheels on the right-hand side), but the stylistic differences between the production version and its conceptual predecessor are obvious at first glance. As we've seen before , the front fascia carries over largely unchanged, although the technorific LED headlamps, deeply recessed fog lamps/air intakes and gaudy brightwork are all left on the designer's desk. The side mirrors have grown in proportion to the door handles, and the C-pillar is noticeably thicker than the concept that bowed in Paris. The rear has also been smoothed over...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Honda Click above for more shots of the leaked 2009 Honda Insight brochure As is so often the case these days, some early details regarding Honda's upcoming Prius-fighter have leaked out before the hybrid's official unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show . Included among the surprises is a Modulo-trimmed Insight featuring a full set of body mods from Honda's accessory catalog in Japan. We can't be sure if any of those bits will come Stateside (we're not betting on it), but it wouldn't be surprising if we got three trim levels similar to what's slated to be available in Honda's home market of Japan. We could get a base DX trim along with an up-level LX edition and a sportier EX model with such tasty bits as a paddle-shifted CVT automatic transmission and navigation system with 7-inch screen. With just 88 horses underhood along with an additional 14 from the hybrid's electric motor, don't expect...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Sedans/Saloons , China , Green BYD, which stands for Build Your Dreams, is a Chinese company with huge ambition to become the world's largest automaker. If there's any chance of making that monumental task a reality, the company will need some amazing products, a stage to present them to the world and a little luck. At least one of those requirements has been met, as BYD is set to capitalize on Nissan's absence at the Detroit Auto Show in January by placing its products right on the main floor with all the rest of the major automakers. BYD's working on the product problem too, having just released its first plug-in hybrid , called the F3DM, in its home market ealier this month. If that weren't enough, the automaker reportedly plans to release two more all-electric models in 2009, with the goal of bring its products to the crucial American and European markets in 2011 . All of these impressive developments have been...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Lexus Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe informed us at least year's Detroit Auto Show that his company would be bringing two new hybrids to this year's show in D-town. The first is the much anticipated next-gen Prius and the second is the first dedicated hybrid model for Lexus. This week the Japanese luxury automaker made it official with a page on its consumer website heralding the debut of the Lexus HS 250h on January 11, smack dab in the middle of press days for the 2009 Detroit Auto Show . Not much else is known about the vehicle, other than that it will be available to buy in the Fall of 2009. We suspect the HS 250h will be a Lexus-badged version of the Prius in much the same way that the ES350 is a version of the Toyota Camry. Thus, the HS 250h will also use the same next-gen Hybrid Synergy drivetrain that will debut in the new Prius, both sporting nickel-metal hydride battery packs for the time being until development...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Crossovers/CUVs , Cadillac , Chevrolet , GM , Rumormill Click above for a high-res gallery of the Cadillac Provoq Concept Through some circumstantial evidence, "rumblings" and tea leave-reading, Autoweek has come to the conclusion that General Motors may unveil a new Cadillac model at the Detroit Auto Show powered by the Chevrolet Volt 's range-extending hybrid powertrain. Rumors of a Caddy-badged Volt have been circulated since earlier this year , with Bob Lutz and other GM execs hinting at the possibility of new hybrid model joining the Cadillac line-up. Lutz told reports back in September that "there's definitely room" for an eco-conscious Caddy and that "there's going to have to be some kind of dramatic environmental statement" from GM's luxury brand. So what form could it take? Opel and Vauxhall versions of the Volt are already planned, but a Cadillac variant would likely be...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , Plants/Manufacturing , Toyota Click above for more images of the 2010 Toyota Prius In a move that's quickly becoming a distinct sign of the times, Toyota has officially announced that it will delay the launch of U.S.-built Toyota Prius at its upcoming Mississippi plant. The plant near Tupelo, which has so far cost the Japanese automaker about $300 million, is about 90% complete but has yet to be fully staffed in preparation of Job One, so it makes sense to suspend its start date instead of shuttering an already operating assembly line elsewhere. Workers already hired to fill various positions will not be let go. The decision was reportedly made just last night, though rumors of a delay of the plant's impending launch have been flying for weeks. Toyota will launch an all-new Prius at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show . The 2010 Toyota Prius is expected to go on sale later in 2009, and with the delay...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Mercedes-Benz Click above for a gallery of the Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZero Mercedes-Benz has unleashed a ton of information (the laughably long press release can be found after the break) on its new Concept BlueZERO threesome , which will debut next month at the Detroit Auto Show . The lime green E-CELL electric model features a range of 120 miles via its on-board lithium ion battery pack. If that's not enough, an extended-range model is available that carries a three-cylinder engine that's cribbed from the smart fortwo and allows for a range of 370 miles on a single charge and one tank of gas. The last version is called the BlueZERO F-CELL and features a fuel cell that will allow for a range of up to 248 miles on a single tank of hydrogen. All three use the same 100kW electric motor and can reach 60 mph in 11 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 93 mph. Each of these three models is built atop Daimler's...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Mercedes-Benz Click above for a gallery of the Mercedes-Benz Concept BlueZero Mercedes-Benz is bringing three "Concept BlueZero" vehicles to the Detroit Auto Show next month and each highlights the automaker's plan for low- or no-emissions motoring in the future. The first concept is the BlueZero E-Cell, an all-electric compact five-door equipped with lithium ion batteries that can provide a theoretical range of 100 km (62 miles) on a two-hour charge. The two other concepts include the BlueZero F-Cell, a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle, and the BlueZero E-Plus, which utilizes the Smart ForTwo's turbocharged three-cylinder engine to charge a lithium ion battery pack creating an extended range electric vehicle (EREV, ala the Chevrolet Volt ), that can travel for 600 km (373 miles). The design language shown on the E-Cell (above) is good indication of what the next generation of Mercedes A- and B-class...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Sedans/Saloons , Green Click above for high-res image gallery of the production Fisker Karma Fisker has just sent us a few more shots of the production-ready Karma plug-in so that we can get a better look at the car's newly revised face . The front intake has been mildly revised in order to let the GM-sourced 260-horsepower Ecotec engine breath a bit more fresh air. It's a subtle change, but we like the results and think that it makes a big difference to the overall look of the car. We also get a good look at those unique exhaust ports that emit the turbocharged mill's spent gases just aft of the front wheels. Lastly, we have an interesting view beneath the slinky bodywork, which shows off the aluminum space frame chassis that holds the car together. We presume that the pronounced center tunnel will house the lithium-ion battery pack. The chassis also shows the new flush B-pillars that were absent on the concept and are...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green Click above for high-res image gallery of the Fisker Karma Just one short year after Fisker debuted its plug-in hybrid Karma show car at the Detroit Auto Show , the house that Henrik built will be returning to the Motor City to debut the production version of its ambitious project. Fisker says the production model, which is shown above in this just-released official pic, will only vary slightly in design from the show car, including a different upper grille that's a bit larger towards the outer edges and a larger lower air intake. The exhaust pipe from the internal combustion engine will also exit from an odd place: behind the front wheels. We'll also get our first view of the Karma's production interior in Detroit next month. Fisker announced last month that it had chosen General Motors' turbocharged, direct-inject 2.0L four-cylinder as its ICE of choice, and after sampling that engine in the Chevy...
