Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Bentley Click above for a high-res gallery of the Bentley GTC Speed The Bentley GTC has only been out for two years and a bit, but you might not know that; the car is so popular in some parts that it has become something like Ugg Boots for the monied-up automotive fashionista. Like its other Continental stablemates, Bentley has finally taken the drophead into their Speed garage for the transformation from really fast to "Egads!" fast. It emerges from said garage with its twin-turbo W12 producing 553 lb-ft. of torque and 600 horsepower - 100 ponies more than the Azure T , making it the most powerful convertible Bentley has ever made. The Speed treatment alters the front end, with a more upright, dark-tinted matrix grille flanked by chrome bezels around the headlights, and the face is framed by firmer lines sweeping up from the lower air dam. While it is still not - and isn't mean to be - a sports car, the handling...

Well that time has arrived and to anyone who has been following the Mustang pattern over the last several years, it should come as no surprise that it's the Shelby GT500. Just like the last iteration, the new GT500 is the most powerful factory production Mustang ever. Like the more prosaic Mustangs, the GT500 is mechanically an evolution of the older model. Just as Ford used the current-gen Bullitt model as the starting point for the 2010 Mustang GT, the lessons learned from developing the limited edition GT500 KR fed directly into the latest Shelby-badged variant. Output of the supercharged 5.4L V8 has now been cranked up to 540 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque...

It is March, though, that will bring year's first real bounty. At Geneva, BMW will be showing off a concept version of the Passive Activity Vehicle (half 5 Series, half X6), the Concept eDrive (an electric 1 Series or 3 Series), a Z4 Individual , and the Rolls-Royce 102EX (otherwise known as the RR4 ). Then in April, BMW's taking the show to Shanghai with the 760Li. Post-Shanghai, you'll get a few months to digest. Then at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, BMW is expected to have the production-ready Passive Activity Vehicle on display and the MINI Crossover . It is there, perhaps, that they'll also trot...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Supercars , Mercedes-Benz Click above for a high-res gallery of the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR Sterling Moss Things got just a bit brighter for the Detroit Auto Show . Mercedes-Benz will officially unveil what will surely be one of the most attention-grabbing cars in Cobo Hall, the 2009 McLaren SLR Stirling Moss. The boldly styled Merc will be the last vehicle built under the partnership with McLaren, and even at a cost of €750,000 Mercedes should have no trouble finding buyers for the 75-car allotment. Each will feature full carbon fiber bodywork wrapped over the standard version, a 650-hp supercharged 5.5-liter V8 and the five-speed automatic transplanted from the SLR 722 . Despite lacking any sort of roof or proper windscreen, the Stirling Moss can still achieve a top speed of 217 mph and can reach 100 km/h in just 3.5 seconds. Other unique features include "swing-wing" doors , a retractable air brake that can be operated...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , BMW Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 BMW Z4 After releasing photos and information on its new Z4 roadster yesterday, we now have a pair of videos showing the Z4 in action. In the first clip BMW Automobile design head Adrian van Hooydonk and exterior design head Anders Warming discuss the new design. The operative word in the new Z4's design appears to be "Joy" although how joyous we'll be this car remains to be seen. Certainly the new look should make observers a lot happier than old one but ultimately any car is about the driving experience. Here the second video demonstrates how you can use the Z4 for the automotive equivalent of finger painting. The videos are after the jump. Thanks to Alberto for the tip! Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , BMW Click above for high-res image gallery of the 2010 BMW Z4 BMW will unveil the all-new Z4 roadster at the Detroit Auto Show next month, but there's no need to wait for the show in Motown to see the car in non-spyshot form, as all the Euro-spec details were officially released when the clock struck midnight in Munich. We're into the new bodywork, which is pretty voluptuous compared to the preceding model, with a hint of 507 lineage evident in the car's lines. Follow the jump for the rest of the skinny. Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Spy Photos , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Ford , Shelby Photo Copyright (C)2008 Ben Wojdyla / Jalopnik. Used with permission. Why wait for the Detroit Auto Show to see the 2010 Shelby GT500 when Ford's driving the thing around Detroit essentially undisguised? Jalopnik's Ben Wojdyla had the convertible version roll right up next to him at a stoplight in Royal Oak, which gave him the opening he needed to grab a bunch of good shots of the forthcoming snake. So, what's new? Well, obviously, the general 2010 Mustang cues all carry over to the range-topper, which also gets a good-looking set of alloys, huge grille openings up front, a heat extractor hood, and all the requisite badging. Ben says the GT500's gutsy exhaust note belnded with a hint blower whine sounds as good as it did before. We're digging the black paint with Grabber Blue stripes, too. Ford drives the new GT500 onstage at Cobo in just over a month from now, and we'll be there...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , BMW We're waiting with bated breath for the December 15 unveiling of the all-new BMW Z4, but as we inch closer to Z-day we're getting a clearer picture of how the redesigned roadster will look. On Wednesday we caught a glimpse of the Z4 that revealed much smoother, very un-Bangle-looking side panels. Above is the newest Z4 teaser, and as you can see, its a booty shot. The first thing we noticed was the bulging rear wheel arch, which gives the Z4 a more sporting personality than its predecessor. BMW designers also added a strong character line that starts from the inside of the headlamp and continues back to the very BMW-looking tail lamps, complete with white LED accent lights. Two healthy-sized exhaust tips reside out back to keep the Z4's naturally aspirated or turbocharged 3.0L in-line six breathing freely. If you see the hard top and assume that you're looking at the Z4 coupe, you're likely wrong. The new Z4 will come...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Marketing/Advertising , MINI Click above for gallery of upcoming MINI Cabrio marketing materials Now that the 2009 Mini Cabrio has been unleashed onto the interwebs, expect to witness a full-court advertising press as the automaker tries to keep up the positive momentum in sales over last year. MINI has always had clever ads for its retro hatches, and that trend will continue with the latest 2009 Cabrio, which is officially set to debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month. Previous marketing attempts have humorously suggested that it's never a good idea to lower the top, and a similar theme is being used again, except in a much more eye-catching manner. Seriously, how disturbing is the ice-covered guy ? That's the stuff of nightmares. Besides print materials, some screen captures of upcoming UK commercials indicate that lowering the soft top is never permissible , even in the face of freezing temperatures, monumental rain puddles or...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Spy Photos , Convertibles , BMW We've been seeing camouflaged photos of the 2010 BMW Z4 tested in various locales for well over a year, but the first, almost fully exposed image has popped up online this morning. The car was apparently in a BMW dealership during filming of a new Michael Douglas movie. We should be getting a full online reveal on December 15 and we'll see the car in person next month at the Detroit Auto Show . The new car cleans up a lot of the Bangle flame surfacing that marred the last car with the front bumper picking up hints of the latest 3-Series. The Z4 will also reportedly have a retractable hard-top in place of the current car's soft top. If that happens, the coupe will likely be consigned to history. Thanks to everyone who tipped us on this! [Source: e89.zpost.com ] 2010 BMW Z4 gets caught on set originally appeared on Autoblog on Wed, 03 Dec 2008 13:58:00 EST. Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Euro , Videos , MINI Click above for a hi-res gallery of the MINI Cabrio Well, here's one car we'll all be able to cover in Detroit come January. BMW has officially announced that the second-generation MINI Cabrio will make its debut at the North American International Auto Show. Germans needn't wait that long to place orders; that they can do now. The Cooper ragtop is priced at €22,500 while the Cooper S convertible costs €4,000 more. Customer delivery of the German cars kicks off on March 28. So, what's new? Well, for one, the new Cabrio looks like the current-gen Cooper. Likewise, it shares the hardtop cars' 1.6L engines -- 120 hp NA for the Cooper, and 160 hp turbo for the Cooper S. The Euro-market cars get BMW Efficient Dynamics features including brake regeneration and stop/start. Out back, the fold-down tailgate's hinges are now internal, giving the car's tush a smoother look. The fixed roll hoops...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Videos , BMW Click above to watch video after the jump We were half-expecting the next generation BMW Z4 to be revealed at last week's LA Auto Show , but instead, we got an eye-full of the new twin-turbocharged V8 7-series and its ActiveHybrid variant . Yesterday, came word that the new coupe and roadster would be unveiled sometime next month and now, we've got a date: December 15th. BMW has launched a teaser site at http://www.bmw.com/joy that seems to imply that the Z4 will come in a variety of vibrant colors. Either that, or BMW is trying its hand at producing a combination slasher film/laundry detergent commercial. There's no actual mention of the Z4, or any other car, on the site, just this odd little video that you can check out after the jump. Expect more details to be revealed in the coming weeks and look forward to live photos of the 2010 Z4 from the Detroit Auto Show in January. [Source: BMW ] Continue reading VIDEO:...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , LA Auto Show , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Volkswagen Automotive News is reporting that Volkswagen has moved the debut of its mid-engine roadster from this month at the LA Auto Show to January at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The only reason given for the move is that VW expects there to be more interest for the concept two-seater in Detroit than LA. We would hazard a guess that it's also got something to do with budgets being trimmed back, but what do we know. There's still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the VW mid-engine roadster, like what size four-cylinder will be installed behind the seats and whether or not the platform will make extensive use of aluminum to keep weight down. Though the car debuting in Detroit will be a concept, a production version is expect in 2011 if things go according to plan. Because a two-seat, mid-engine roadster is anything but a volume seller, however, this...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Economy , MINI Click above for a gallery of the 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible MotoringFile , ground zero on the web for all things MINI, has the scoop on the long-awaited 2009 MINI Cooper Convertible. Someone slipped MF seven official shots of the Detroit-bound R57 Cooper ragtop along with some additional inside information. Obviously, it's based on the current chassis and powertrains, so you know what you're going to get there. Additionally, the JCW package is supposedly going to be available at launch as well. One of the most obvious visual changes in the new convertible is the use of pop-up roll hoops instead of the fixed units featured on the old car. This, in addition to looking cleaner, should improve rearward visibility with the top down. Speaking of the top being down, the new car includes a cutesy little gimmick called the 'Always Open" gauge. Located next to the tach housing, it tells the driver the percentage of...
