  • Geneva 2008: production Ford Kuga

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Ford Click above to view the Ford Kuga in hi-res Kinetic design has been swallowing Ford of Europe's product range whole, and took a big bite at this year's Geneva Motor Show. Alongside the new Fiesta , Ford showed off the production version of the all-new Kuga crossover. Previewed by the concept unveiled at the last Frankfurt show and drawing on styling cues from the Iosis X show car, the Kuga is based on the same platform as the slicker Focus they get overseas. Although the Kuga is admittedly one more European model that Ford won't offer in its home market, we're not short of Ford crossovers to choose from over here, so we'll let the Europeans have this one. (Just give us the Focus RS and we'll be happy.) But to see what we're missing, check out our gallery of images from the Geneva show floor by clicking on the thumbnails below. Unfortunately, although we're sure the Kuga rolled off its turntable...
  • Geneva 2008: Renault Koleos clocks in for work

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Renault Click above to view high-res gallery of the new Renault Koleos Renault pulled out all the stops for this year's Geneva Motor Show , taking the wraps off the swoopy Megane Coupe concept , as well as debuting the Twingo Renaultsport , Laguna GT and this, the Koleos crossover. Although closely based on mechanicals borrowed from sister-company Nissan, the Koleos is far more of a complete project than that other pair of French sport-utes from archrival PSA Peugeot-Citroen . The Koleos shared center stage with the Megane Coupe this week, outlining how important the new model is to Renault. This is its first proper foray into the sport-ute segment, finally surrendering when the French automaker realized the crossover craze would not be subsiding any time soon. When you can't beat 'em, join 'em, the saying goes, but push come to snooty shove, Renault actually appears to have done a decent job. For all the details...
  • Geneva 2008: Opel Meriva, a new take on the MPV

Filed under: Concept Cars , Minivans/MPVs , Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , GM , Opel Click above for a high-res gallery of the Opel Meriva concept. We finally wound our way over to Opel's booth to check out the newest take on the compact MPV concept. The Meriva's small footprint would lend itself well to the urban confines Opel expects the majority of buyers to be based out of, and the FlexDoors, a modern take on the suicide doors of yore, should make ingress and egress easier for the kiddies and anyone else banished to the back of the mini-bus. Opel wanted to maintain the stylistic edge of a high belt-line, which normally impedes rearward visibility, but the slopping rear windows and D-pillar might make blind spots a bit more bearable when some version of the Meriva makes it to production around the turn of the decade. You can read up on all the details about the Opel Meriva concept in the press release after the jump. Gallery: Opel Meriva Concept Continue reading Geneva...
  • Geneva 2008: Volvo XC60 softroads in style

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Volvo Click above for a high-res gallery of the Volvo XC60. Volvo's entrance into the ever-expanding crossover segment was finally revealed here in Geneva when the wraps were pulled off the new XC60. The swoopy, Swedish cute 'ute will make its way Stateside later this year powered by the turbocharged T6, producing 281 hp and coming standard with all-wheel-drive and Volvo's extensive safety features. Aside from the Instant Traction control, a new system, dubbed City Safety, applies the brakes if a low-speed impact is eminent. Volvo expects to unload around 50,000 XC60s a year, with 15,000-20,000 units sold here in the U.S. Volvo's exhaustive press release is posted after the jump. • Geneva 2008: Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode aims to isolate

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Hyundai Click above for a high-res gallery of the Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode. Some automakers consistently trot out well-conceived, beautifully sculpted concepts to the world's auto shows. Others swing for the fences and rarely make it passed the infield. Hyundai seems to do a little of both. The Genesis duo proved that Hyundai could bring impressive ideas to life, but in the case of the i-Mode, the CUV of the future reminds us of too many concepts in the past. The theory behind HED-5 iMode is sound: schlep four occupants to and fro, with an emphasis on isolation and comfort. However, the design remains the biggest stumbling block for this far-reaching people mover. The front end is an amalgamation of creases, bulges and oddly shaped panels, and while the profile is appealing enough, the D-pillar and rear end err on the side of design for design's sake. LG Electronics was tapped to provide the entertainment systems, which...
  • Geneva 2008: Kia bears its SOULs

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Kia Click above for a high-res gallery of all the Kia SOUL concepts. The production version of the Kia SOUL is on its way, and is likely to make its official debut sometime later this year. As an appetizer for what's to come, Kia unveiled three SOUL concepts in Geneva that supposedly speak directly to the perceived intentions and personalities of its buyers. The first of the three concepts shown was the SOUL Burner, which takes the Korean automaker's idea of the bad-boy lifestyle to an ill-informed, urban extreme. From there, Kia takes off a pop-idol tangent with its "Diva" model, which purports to be sporting a more feminine, yet edgy appearance. We're not sure about how someone of the female gender would feel behind the wheel of a the SOUL, but we're guessing that the gold wheels and matching trim might turn off someone that was upwardly mobile. Lastly, the SOUL Searcher is exactly as its name...
  • BREAKING: 2009 Infiniti FX makes after hours debut in Geneva

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Infiniti Click above image for a high-res gallery of the unveiling of the 2009 FX from Geneva Last week we showed you a teaser shot of the headlight of the all-new 2009 Infiniti FX . Tonight in Geneva we saw the whole thing. Carlos Ghosn himself introduced the new FX at a club-like venue just down the road from the Palexpo. Accompanied by some choreographed theatrics, the new FX dropped from the ceiling and landed front and center ahead of its EX37 and G37 siblings, which will join it in the new Infiniti dealerships starting up in Europe this year. The redesigned 2009 FX will come in three different flavors, topping out with the FX50 we saw here. As the name tells us, it features a new 5.0L V8, said to be good for 390HP and more than 500nM of torque. Fairly stout numbers compared to the outgoing 4.5. The 2009 FX should start appearing at North American Infiniti dealers by June. You can read about the rest of the changes to this fairly highly...
  • Geneva 2008: Renault Megane Coupe concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Renault Click above for high-res of the Renault Megane Coupe concept. Koleos, Laguna GT and Twingo RS. Those are three of the four new models which Renault was anticipated to unveil at this year's Geneva show, but right up until the end of the press conference, a big question mark hung over the identity of the fourth. The wraps have been taken off and the veils have been lifted, revealing the Megane Coupe concept. The existing Megane - along with its distinguished curved rear window - is on its way out , and Renault is assuredly working hard at a new design that will capture buyers' attention in an increasingly crowded market. But while the concept is likely a very far ways away from what the production version will end up looking like, it did grab its share of attention. See for yourself in our high-resolution image gallery below. Gallery: Renault Megane Coupe Concept Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Geneva 2008: Here comes the Audi Q7 V12 TDI!

Filed under: SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Green , Crossovers/CUVs , Audi Click above for high-res gallery of the Audi Q7 V12 TDI Audi may not have any current plans to offer the monster R8 V12 TDI it showed in Detroit to consumers, but that doesn't mean the 12-cylinder oil burner is going to waste. We first saw Audi's 6L V12 diesel mounted in a Q7 V12 TDI concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show , and now it looks like it will be heading to showrooms. Volkswagen's southern branch will be offering the Q7 V12 TDI quattro to customers with enough cash, although exactly how much lettuce will be needed is unknown at this point. Audi plans to start taking pre-orders for the 758 lb-ft, all-wheel-drive seven-seater in the second half of this year. The Germans also haven't said if U.S. dollars will be acceptable for the transaction or Euros will be required. What we do know is that mind-boggling torque figure and the 500 hp peak coming from the V12 oil burner. Even in this large, high...
  • Not quite official: Infiniti dealer posts FX teaser online

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Infiniti A certain sales manager from a certain dealership in Long Island was kind enough to take a little bit of the wind out of Infiniti's sails ahead of its unveiling of the redesigned FX CUV. The detailed headlamp shot above was posted on an Infiniti FX forum (who knew?), and pretty much confirms the styling tweaks the new fascia will get, particularly when you imagine it on the set of spy shots we've seen already. The only thing that's left to the imagination is the reconfigured rear end, which will likely sport some new tail lamps and a redesigned bumper. We'd be remiss not to point out that it's not in the dealer's best interest to include his name and contact information in his forum signature, lest Infiniti's corporate communications folks come calling. Thanks for the tip Jonathan. Gallery: Spy Shots: 2009 Infiniti FX [Source: InfinitiFX.org ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Geneva '08 Preview: Mercedes Vision GLK BlueTec Diesel Hybrid concept gets 40mpg

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Geneva Motor Show , Green , Crossovers/CUVs , Mercedes Benz Click above for a high-res gallery of the MB GLK Hybrid When Mercedes-Benz premiered the new GLK compact SUV at the Detroit Auto Show in January, the styling struck most people as at best awkward. With the outward appearance of the full-size GL shrunk down to an Escape-sized vehicle, it still looks like a reject for a Chrysler Sebring crossover. Regardless of what you think of the exterior body work, the latest edition of the GLK that Mercedes is showing in concept form at Geneva next week seems to be capable of pretty serious mileage for an SUV/CUV. The Vision GLK BlueTec Hybrid is another in the series of models using the new mild hybrid system Mercedes is developing with BMW. In this case, Mercedes has combined it with the 2.2L four cylinder diesel for a total output of 224 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to move the GLK to 62 mph in 7.3 sec while getting 40 mpg (US). On the outside...
  • Officially Official: 2009 Volvo XC60 debuts ahead of Geneva

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Volvo Click above for new high-res gallery of the 2009 Volvo XC60 After a series of leaks that has already revealed the look of Volvo's new XC60 CUV, the Swedish automaker has released the real deal, including some official specs for its smallest soft-roader. Volvo believes the design of the XC60 is the best interpretation yet of the brand's essence, saying that its clean lines and clear identity "radiate a clear Volvo presence" from at least twice the distance of any current model. In the U.S., power will be ample thanks to the company's turbocharged T6 motor producing 281 horsepower and all-wheel-drive is also standard. Like all cars from Volvo, safety is a top priority, so in addition to the normal smattering of active and passive safety systems, the XC60 is fitted with City Safety, a new system that will automatically apply the brakes if a low-speed impact is imminent. Volvo also wants the XC60 to be an aspirational...
  • Geneva '08 Preview: Kia SOUL burner concept, the Koreans go after Scion

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Kia Click the Kia SOUL Burner concept to enlarge Part of the selling point of Toyota's Scion brand has been offering a very limited number of factory configurations and an almost endless list of customization options. Likewise, Scion ads often highlight the many ways that owners have made their cars unique. Kia now looks like it wants to follow a similar strategy for the production version of the new SOUL compact CUV . At the Geneva show in a couple of weeks, it'll be showing a trio of SOUL concepts that highlight the personalization options for the new car. The first teaser shot of the one Kia calls the SOUL Burner has just been released showing off its matte paint finish, tattoos and fancy wheels. • More leakage: New 2009 Volvo XC60 images appear

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Volvo Click above for more leaked images of the 2009 Volvo XC60. Just this morning we showed you four leaked images of the upcoming Volvo XC60 CUV that will officially debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show. Those four have now been increased to include 13 leaked images that Carscoop found while rummaging around the interweb today. It's a handsome soft-roader for sure, but we think most Volvos are good looking and yet that doesn't seem to translate into huge sales numbers for the brand. Carscoop also claims to know a few more details about the XC60, including that it will get a turbocharged 3.0L V6 in Europe producing 285 horsepower, as well as a 2.4L turbo-diesel making either 163 hp or 185 hp. Take those figures as hearsay until it's made officially official by Volvo, but the new images appear to be the real deal, so feast your eyes on the whole batch below. • Leakage: Volvo XC60 shots hit the 'Net before Geneva

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Volvo Click above for more shots of the Volvo XC60. The Geneva Motor Show is right around the bend and the "leaks" are beginning to pop up left and right. The first major production model to surface is Volvo's new XC60, a cute 'ute that's instrumental to Volvo's future plans in the U.S. market. The XC60 originally appeared on (lemme get this right) automenedzser.hu and the design stays faithful to the concept that bowed in Detroit back in 2007. While the front end doesn't carry over some of the concept's metallic adornments, the fascia, with its drawn headlamps, dual air dams and sweeping fenders, are present and accounted for. The rear end also closely resembles the concept's, complete with the shapely rear LED taillamps and curved hatch. When the XC60 goes on sale, it's expected to be packing a combination of gasoline and diesel powerplants, including a 1.8-liter, 2.5-liter turbo and 3.2-liter...
