  • KTM bringing faster, harder X-Bow to Geneva in 2009

Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes Click above for a high-res gallery of the KTM X-Bow. As previously reported , KTM plans to expand its offerings beyond the X-Bow, with the introduction of a duo of new city cars and a lightweight off-roader. But KTM isn't content with leaving the X-Bow alone . When the Geneva Motor Show rolls around next March, the newest entrant into the four-wheeled world will get a healthy boost in output courtesy of the Audi S3's 261 hp, 2.0-liter turbocharged FSI engine. According to Autocar , the more powerful model could be joined later by a new variant sporting a full windshield and a removable roof, making the case for the X-Bow more compelling and allowing KTM to take aim at traditional track toys. • Geneva 2008: Japanese ambition, the K07 Spyder

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show , Japan Click above for a gallery of the K.O. 7 and 8. When we make the trek to Switzerland each year, there always seems to be one particular car that stands out. It's generally something unexpected from an independent automaker far removed from the spotlight. This year, tucked away in a corner cubicle of the Geneva Motor Show's basement, was the K.O. 7 Spider, a concept hailing from Japan that attempts to strike a balance between bespoke supercar and track-day terror. There were actually two vehicles on display at the Ken Okuyama Design booth: the K.0. 8 coupe, an E.V. that's decidedly less attractive and strictly a design exercise, and the K.O. 7, a production model that will be on sale sometime in 2008. Hit the jump for all the details. Gallery: K.O. 7 and K.O. 8 Continue reading Geneva 2008: Japanese ambition, the K07 Spyder Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Geneva 2008: KTM X-Bow Dallara, ready for delivery

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show Click above for a high-res gallery of the production KTM X-Bow. A year ago, we had our first formal introduction to the KTM X-Bow concept. After a scant 12 months, the famed motorcycle manufacturer has officially unveiled the production version of the X-Bow, and over 2,000 people have lined up to get their hands on one of the most driver-focused vehicles to be released since the introduction of the Ariel Atom. Not much has changed from the original concept. The same Audi-sourced, 220 hp TFSI four-cylinder engine is mounted out back and with only 1,500 pounds holding the carbon fiber track tool back, the sprint to 60 comes up in 3.9 seconds. KTM has smoothed out some of the rough edges, including the exhaust/intake systems, added a fully adjustable suspension and tweaked the bodywork and cockpit, but it's still minimalist motoring at its finest. Back in 2007 we called it better than the best rollercoaster around , and one year...
  • Geneva 2008: Alfa Romeo 8C Spider

Filed under: Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show , Supercars , Alfa Romeo Click above to view the Alfa 8C Spider in hi-res All the big rollers came out for the game this year in Geneva, but Alfa Romeo raised the stakes yet again with the unveiling of the production version of the breathtakingly curvaceous 8C Spider. Take the term "production" with a grain of salt, though, as only 500 examples of the roadster will be built, making this one of the few chances we'll have to see and bring you this exemplary piece of exotic Italian machinery first-hand. Newly-appointed CEO Luca de Meo was on hand to unveil the ivory roadster to the throngs of anxiously awaiting scribes and photogs, but that didn't stop us from shooting the 8C until our hands started to tremble. Check out our best shots in our high-resolution gallery, laid out with the thumbnails below for your viewing pleasure, along with the press release excerpt after the jump. • Geneva 2008: Mercedes SL63 is white hot

Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes Benz Click the image above for more hi-res shots of the SL63 Two doors, no top, red leather interior, ceramic brakes, and 538 horses is a combination you once expected to be named for an Italian city or racing personage. No more. And while the alpha-numeric SL63 might not be all that Germanic in itself, it gets no more Teutonic than the hyphenated moniker "Mercedes-Benz" that precedes it. Now that Merc is making cars as fast as those of its Latin neighbor, perhaps the SL63 -- being a tad more comfortable -- is the car you drive to go check on the progress of your bespoke Italian supercar. Check out the hi-res gallery of the Bahn-burningest droptop. Gallery: 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG & SL65 AMG Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Geneva 2008: M3 Cab takes the spotlight

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , BMW Click the above photo for more shots of the M3 Convertible BMW was highlighting its green credentials today, so it gave no more than a mention to the M3 Cabriolet -- but that doesn't mean the M3 went unloved. The impossibly blue convertible sat just around the corner from the Vision Hybrid in the spotlight, brooding, but with plenty of press-type friends taking pictures and asking questions. Have a look at the live shots in the gallery below to see why. Gallery: Geneva 2008: BMW M3 Cabriolet Gallery: 2009 BMW M3 Convertible Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • KTM planning closed coupe and off-road versions of X-Bow

Filed under: Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show Click above for a high-res gallery of the KTM X-Bow The unveiling of the production KTM X-Bow is just a week away, but the biker builder has bigger plans to expand its foray into four-wheeled conveyances. KTM's head honcho, Stefan Pierer, has revealed to CAR that the future of the X-Bow will include five different versions of the lightweight roadster, and that KTM is looking to take on Lotus as a manufacturer of specialty performance vehicles. With over 2,000 orders for the X-Bow already placed, KTM has a hit on its hands. So aside from the base model and a race-spec version that will be campaigned in the FIA GT4 lightweight class, KTM also plans to offer another road-going variant that will be sporting a set of doors and a roof. From there, it's looking to upgrade the stock mill with a 330-hp V6 pulled from the Audi S3, and since the architecture of the X-Bow has been designed from the onset to handle the rigors away from the tarmac...
  • Geneva '08 Preview: Rinspeed sQuba Concept - For the spy who loves you

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertibles , Hybrids/Alternative , Geneva Motor Show , Etc. click above for more high-res images of the Rinspeed sQuba Back in 1977, James Bond took a Lotus Esprit for a swim in The Spy Who Loved Me . It's only fitting that Swiss design company Rinspeed, known for its crazy concepts that often involve playing in the water, has based its newest creation on the Lotus Elise. Called the sQuba, this submersible convertible was first previewed back in December , but the firm has released tons of high-res photos, video and new information on its water toy. The sQuba is an all-electric vehicle with three motors, one to drive the car on land and two to power a pair of screw drives for underwater movement. These are aided by two Seabob jet drives that "breathe" through rotating louvers mounted on the car's fenders and appear to give the car its maneuverability underwater. Some might think a submersible convertible sounds like a submarine with a screen...
  • Geneva '08 Preview: Lorinser Nardo3 Mercedes SL

Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes Benz , UAW/Unions click above image to view more images of the Lorinser Nardo3 Mercedes SL Perennial Mercedes-Benz tuner Lorinser is coming to Geneva with some new toys. Highlighting its booth at the fast-approaching auto salon will be the Nardo3. Based on the outgoing Mercedes SL AMG roadster, the Nardo3 borrows its name from the high-speed test track in Italy and strives to live up to the name by boosting power from the twin-turbo V12 to 660 hp. It also features some slick aero mods, including a new rear bumper with integrated exhaust outlets and a new front end to match. Although Mercedes has already announced its new AMG SL-Class roadsters , Lorinser will only produce 50 copies of the Nardo3 and should have no trouble selling them. Lorinser will also be showcasing its modifications for diesel Mercedes-Benz cars with the C-Class T-Model that upgrades the C320 T CDI with revised electronics, boosting power...
  • Geneva '08 Preview: Spyker to unveil long-wheelbase C8

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Supercars , Spyker The current standard-wheelbase Spyker C8 Laviolette Spyker may be down, but it's not out. The Dutch exotic automaker has fallen on some hard times , but that's not going to stop it from moving forward with at least some of its plans. The C12 Zagato has been postponed indefinitely , but at the upcoming Geneva auto show in March, Spyker is expected to unveil an improved version of its existing C8 Laviolette. As wonderfully quirky as the current C8 is, owners complain of constricted space. In response Spyker has stretched the wheelbase, giving more space in the cabin while improving the vehicles proportions. The C8 Laviolette LWB will feature an elongated version of the current model's glass roofline. A long wheelbase Spyder version is expected to follow sometime thereafter, benefiting from a proper motorized convertible roof instead of the largely useless folding rag on the current short-wheelbase...
  • Leakage: BMW M3 Cabrio with "M-DKG"

Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Geneva Motor Show , BMW One enthusiast from the Netherlands described the E93 thusly: "Super vette bak!" We're pretty sure that translates to "super fat barge," though the overly-literal "super oily bake" has its own charm. If you're into cabrios, maybe mutating the phrase to "super phat barge" is more palatable. Our friend from NL was referring to the 200-plus extra pounds the M3 cabrio will be hauling around versus its sedan counterparts. The folding-roof M3 doesn't officially debut until the Geneva Auto Salon in March, but a German magazine jumped the gun and posted images on their website. Embargo apparently broken, the pictures continue to propagate about the internet. The biggest news with the pending debut of the convertible M3 is the gearbox. The new seven-speed dual-clutch replacement for the SMG transmission, dubbed M-DKG, is reported to debut with the M3 cab and will be available across all...
