Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Videos , Supercars , Ferrari Click above to watch the video So far the only video footage we've seen of the new Ferrari California has been either computer animated or sitting still with a giant chin talking . But the fellas over at Autocar magazine in the UK made their way down to Maranello with video cameras in tow for an up-close-and-personal with the newest Prancing Stallion. After the jump you'll find some focus-changing fun angles of the new California, as well as a brief interview with product development director Roberto Corradi, who amusingly informs us that the car was made easier to drive and more softly styled to accommodate female customers. Seriously. Check it out after the jump ... it's good for a laugh. Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Supercars , Ferrari Click above for high-res gallery of the Ferrari California Some of the more hard-core tifosi have been whining that Ferrari has gone soft with the new California . It's pretty hard to justify that a car able to hit 60 mph in the three-second range is soft, but so be it. The nay-sayers point to the inclusion of a folding hard-top as a sign that Ferrari has grown more concerned with pleasing its poseur clientele than developing genuine performance vehicles. Never mind that the innovative rapid-deployment roof, according to Ferrari, actually weighs 5kg less than an equivalent soft-top and still only takes 14 seconds to raise or lower. However, Maranello has not finished development of the California and intends to pacify those malcontents with some new features. For starters, Ferrari says that about 10% of its customers still demand a manual transmission, and so they will have one ready for the California by the time it actually...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Videos , Supercars , Ferrari With Ferrari's road and race cars taking advantage of the latest emerging technologies, someone inside the marketing department in Maranello has taken the bold initiative to bring the company's PR into the same realm by utilizing popular electronic media. For its latest supercar, the highly-anticipated Ferrari California , the company has been releasing bits and pieces on a dedicated, flash-enhanced website , and the latest installment has just hit cyberspace. For this episode, Ferrari has teamed up with the wiz-kids at Polyphony Digital who are the brains behind the Gran Turismo franchise. They offer up an adrenaline-pumping virtual reality video of the California racing through the virtual streets of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in the same style as the game's intro. And now that they have the car scanned, it shouldn't be long before you can download the California on your PS3 to drive in the game. We hope...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Supercars , Ferrari Click for more of the Ferrari California in San Francisco This was bound to happen sooner or later, and sooner it is: still over a month before its official public unveiling at the Paris Motor Show in October, the new Ferrari California has been spotted in its element: the streets of San Francisco. The car was ostensibly there for a promotional photo shoot, but its presence in Northern California this close to Pebble Beach makes us wonder if Ferrari isn't planning an early peek on the putting green in Monterey. Whether at Pebble or Paris, we'll be there to bring you the latest, so stayed tuned. In the meantime check out the (admittedly blurry) photos in the gallery below. Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Videos , Supercars , Ferrari , Celebrities Click above for high-res gallery of Schumacher and the California Michael Schumacher may have departed the Formula One grid, but he has most definitely not left Ferrari. The seven-time world champion, widely credited with building Ferrari into the power house it is today, still comes around the paddock at various tracks around the world to give the Prancing Horse's latest creations - whether racing cars or road vehicles - a healthy dose of Schuey-trademarked punishment. After having been intimately involved with the development of the 430 Scuderia - proclaimed as the fastest road-going Ferrari ever to lap the company's private circuit - Schumacher returned to Fiorano to give his input on Maranello's newest offering, the California. And while his opinion is hardly impartial, he certainly knows what he's talking about and his impressions were glowing. Speaking to the conference of Ferrari dealers...

Filed under: Convertibles , Safety , Ferrari We're fully aware that even supercars must undergo crash testing. But we like to think of the process the same way we do hamburgers. When we get hungry, we're able to totally banish any curiosity about what gruesome process transformed the cow into lunch. Photos from inside a slaughterhouse would evoke the same emotions as these shots of a Ferrari California after crash testing. The Italian Web site that posted them says they were taken at Ferrari supplier Webasto . The Germany-based company created the convertible top for Ferrari's Superamerica, and are apparently testing their product on the California. But, thanks to Google's interesting Italian translation we're not exactly sure what's going on. Can you make any sense of, "According to recent information, however, Webasto has yet to make up because their folding roof is still suffering from a children's diseases." We sure hope it's not contagious...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Tech , Videos , Supercars , Ferrari Click on the image above to jump to the video If you're on Ferrari's mailing list for the new California, you might have seen a new email in your inbox today with a link to another chapter (literally) opening up on the vehicle's dedicated website. Today's installment leads to a video of the California's trick folding hard-top - another first for Ferrari (if you don't count the innovative one-piece mechanism designed by Fioravanti for the limited-production 575-based Superamerica). Thanks to a mechanism that moves multiple segments in unison, the hard-top can be deployed or retracted in only 15 seconds - faster than the soft-top on any convertible ever to roar out of the gates at Maranello. Follow the jump to watch the video. Gallery: 2009 Ferrari California [Source: Ferrari ] Continue reading VIDEO: Ferrari California's fast-action retractable hard-top Read | Permalink | Email this ...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Supercars , Ferrari Click above for hi-res gallery of the Ferrari California For the unveiling of its first front-engined V8 sportscar, Ferrari rolled out a dedicated launch site. But up until now, the site (as well as the company's media portal) only gave us a glimpse at a handful of studio shots. Germany's AutoBild , meanwhile, managed to obtain a handful of new shots of the California out in the open, inside and out and front to back. Natural sunlight seems to soften the sportscar's lines a fair deal... but don't take our word for it: Check out the images in the gallery below to see for yourself. Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Paris Motor Show , Ferrari Click above for a high-res gallery of the Ferrari California var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/New_Ferrari_California_Pics'; The gang in Maranello is continuing to dribble out more imagery of the new Ferrari California roadster, now with the car now making its first appearance with its hard top up. This blue GT can be seen in the gallery below with the top up, down and halfway in between. Thankfully, in spite of the 2+ designation (whatever that means) the car still maintains two-seater proportions, so it doesn't have a ridiculously long rear deck. There has been plenty of discussion in the comments about the virtues of the California's design details, but the overall proportions are definitely classic GT the folding hard top manages not to screw that up. Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo recently had his first crack at driving the new car at the company's Fiorano test track and unsurprisingly...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Ferrari Click above for more unnaturally colored images of the Ferrari California Since Ferrari released the first official photos and details about its new California hard-top convertible last week, the car has no doubt caused an unhealthy amount of drool to collect in pools around the world. Of course, Ferrari debuted the car in the only color it could: Ferrari Red. But there are many other hues out there and we suspect Ferrari owners, at least those in the U.S. who have no shame, are not your typical fanboys and will repaint their California convertibles on day one of ownership to match their favorite shirt. The folks at pigmag.com apparently understand this behavior, and have created a series of images showing the 2009 Ferrari California in every unnatural tinge your mind could conjure. We like the gunmetal gray with the matte black wheels , but your 16-year-old daughter may lean toward the pink one with shiny chrome rims . Click above for new...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Paris Motor Show , Supercars , Ferrari Click on the Ferrari California for some wallpaper quality high-res shots var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Ferrari_reveals_new_California_GT_convertible'; Just days after Ferrari launched the teaser site for its new GT, the first full images and details of the new the Ferrari California have been revealed. Even though the countdown timer on the teaser site still indicates there's a week to go before the next info reveal, the countdown itself is little more than a formality. Like other modern Ferraris, this one is fabricated from aluminum to keep mass under control. The 460 hp 4.3L V8 is the first from Maranello to use direct injection while following the racing tradition of using a flat-plane crankshaft. This car of firsts also debuts the production application of a dual clutch gearbox from Ferrari. The 7-speed unit is mounted in a rear transaxle configuration and should provide smoother shifting...
