Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Supercars , Mercedes-Benz They have got to be kidding. Another SLR derivative? Before the Mercedes-McLaren supercar speeds off into the horizon, it will have spawned no less than six different versions - including the original coupe, the Roadster, 722, 722 GT, the upcoming "Speedster" , and this latest variant - if the latest reports are to be believed. We would have thought that the spied Speedster version would have been the last, but then spy shots surface of what appears to be a 722 Roadster. This undisguised vehicle carries all the visual cues of the 722 edition coupe: the dark grey 19" forged alloys hiding red brake calipers over oversized discs, plus the carbon fiber lip spoiler and darkened taillight clusters. The convertible can be expected to carry the same 650-hp supercharged V8 as the 722 coupe, only with the nifty hard-soft top from the roadster. By the state of readiness evident from these spy shots, we'd venture...

Filed under: In the Autoblog Garage , Convertibles , Euro , Mercedes-Benz , AMG Click above for a high-res gallery of the 2008 Mercedes SLK55 AMG It sits there, all tension and sinew, ready to pounce on lesser cars. Start it up and it barks with a clear V8 voice that thumps off the neighbor's house, setting them discreetly peeking from behind their lace curtains. This is an SLK? Oh yeah. No longer a blocky Benz with dwarfism, the SLK55 AMG ripples with muscle and delivers speed like a spin kick to the temple. A bad-ass Mercedes, indeed. Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Coupes , Videos , Mercedes Benz It's hard not to think about the prodigious power slated to appear in the Mercedes Benz SL65 AMG Black Edition. A twin-turbo 6.0-liter V12 with 670 hp and and an absurd 738 lb-ft of torque can do that. Factor in a 570-lb weight loss courtesy of exotic materials, and you've got a Benz that can flat destroy almost anything else on the road. World Car Fans has obtained video of the still-disguised SL65 Black Edition in action cruising the Nürburgring, and the few seconds of action caught on tape shows that the battle for 'Ring supremacy is far from over. The SL65 is shown taking corners at speed and sounding like a jet aircraft. The GT-R may be grabbing the 'Ring headlines now, but it looks like the Germans are preparing to defend their home turf, and in a big way. Look out, Godzilla. Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Convertibles , Euro , Mercedes Benz , Brabus Click above for a high-res gallery of the BRABUS SL "BRABUS" might as well be German for, "Hey, why not?" This would seem to be the question its engineers ask themselves before they stuff ludicrous amounts of power under the hoods of Mercedes-Benz cars and trucks. This behavior is well - documented , and it continues unabated with the arrival of MB's new SL . Full wheel/tire, interior, and styling packages are a given. Backing up those enhanced looks is an assortment of tuning packages capable of providing more power than even Montgomery Scott could ever plead for. The SV12 S Biturbo engine swap appears to have been created by someone with a severe, pathological hatred for tires. This is the same engine used in the Brabus Bullit , and it dishes out a predictably ridiculous 720 horsepower and 973 lb-ft of torque. The latter number is electronically restrained to a mere 811 lb-ft., and...

Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Mercedes Benz , Lifestyle Click above for high-res gallery of the SL 63 AMG Edition IWC Autoblog does a lot of posts on car-related timepieces, and that's thanks to Noah who has an affinity for the finer automotive-inspired paraphernalia in life. Unfortunately, he's not here right now, so I get to tell you about this new limited edition Mercedes-Benz SL 63 that's being produced in conjunction with Swiss watchmaker IWC Schaffhausen. Only 200 will be made, and each features the first application of a new white paint finish dubbed designo magno Kashmir. Though my desensitized retinas see plain old white where others see shades of Pearl and Egg Shell, there's no denying this brilliant veneer looks like a million bucks on the SL 63 AMG. Contrast that with the matte black finish of other components on the car's exterior, and you've got the world's most expensive Storm Trooper. Tobago Brown nappa leather will cradle your bum in the...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Mercedes Benz Apparently Mercedes-Benz will finally offer a glass roof on its SLK hardtop convertible, similar to the one fitted to the little coupe's big brother, the SL. The two-piece roof looks very similar to the SL's, with the only discernible difference from the standard SLK being a slightly tweaked C-pillar. Aside from that, nothing else will change except that occupants can finally enjoy scenic surrounds while being isolated from uncomfortable climes. Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes Benz Click the image above for more hi-res shots of the SL63 Two doors, no top, red leather interior, ceramic brakes, and 538 horses is a combination you once expected to be named for an Italian city or racing personage. No more. And while the alpha-numeric SL63 might not be all that Germanic in itself, it gets no more Teutonic than the hyphenated moniker "Mercedes-Benz" that precedes it. Now that Merc is making cars as fast as those of its Latin neighbor, perhaps the SL63 -- being a tad more comfortable -- is the car you drive to go check on the progress of your bespoke Italian supercar. Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Convertibles , Economy , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Supercars , Mercedes Benz , SMART , Brabus Click image for a hi-res gallery of the Brabus SLR and its tender Megayachts usually come with fancy tenders , so why not supercars, too? BRABUS has taken the idea and run with it, pairing one of its tuned McLaren SLR Roadsters with a matching runabout in the form of a smart fortwo-based ULTIMATE 112. The SLR is the beneficiary of the usual complement of upgrades, including a full body and trim kit (dig those carbon fiber replacement "gills"), a custom interior, and the requisite underhood tweaking, which bestows the roadster with 650 horsepower -- enough to make the Kessel run to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top end of 211 mph. When its time to park the super-Merc and head into more constrained areas of the city, it's occupants can switch over to the car's ULTIMATE 112 "tender" which is finished and appointed to perfectly...

Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes Benz , UAW/Unions click above image to view more images of the Lorinser Nardo3 Mercedes SL Perennial Mercedes-Benz tuner Lorinser is coming to Geneva with some new toys. Highlighting its booth at the fast-approaching auto salon will be the Nardo3. Based on the outgoing Mercedes SL AMG roadster, the Nardo3 borrows its name from the high-speed test track in Italy and strives to live up to the name by boosting power from the twin-turbo V12 to 660 hp. It also features some slick aero mods, including a new rear bumper with integrated exhaust outlets and a new front end to match. Although Mercedes has already announced its new AMG SL-Class roadsters , Lorinser will only produce 50 copies of the Nardo3 and should have no trouble selling them. Lorinser will also be showcasing its modifications for diesel Mercedes-Benz cars with the C-Class T-Model that upgrades the C320 T CDI with revised electronics, boosting power...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Euro , Mercedes Benz Click image for photo gallery As expected, the advent of a new SL also brings with it the arrival of a new AMG variant. Gone is the supercharged, 510-horsepower SL55 AMG . In its place, we welcome the new SL63 AMG, which uses AMG's naturally-aspirated 6.2L V8 making 538 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Like its standard-grade siblings, the new AMG SL is restyled, featuring a new-look fascia, side gills and revised rump. AMG-specific elements like a unique hood, a full aero kit, wheels that look lifted from a Porsche 911 Turbo, and all the requisite badging are also included. Inside, leather and carbon fiber adorn the cockpit, which is also outfitted with the usual assortment of electro-gadgetry, including Bluetooth connectivity that'll work with any phone so enabled. The big news with the new SL63 is the addition of Mercedes' seven-speed twin-clutch SpeedShift MCT (Multi-Clutch Transmission) with four drive modes...

Filed under: Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Mercedes Benz click above for more high-res images of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL Today, Mercedes-Benz officially released details regarding the 2009 SL-class, photos of which escaped onto the web last week. In addition to its updated exterior styling, which you can see for yourself in the attached gallery, the hard-shell droptop adds a new entry model for Europe -- the 231-horsepower SL 280. On top of that, the SL 350 gains power (now 316 horses) while improving overall fuel economy. The other engines are carryovers -- the 388-horse V8 in the SL 500 and the monstrous 517-HP twin-turbo V12 in the SL 600. The flagship 600 is distinguishable from its lesser kin via unique 18" wheels and the matte-finish "gills" aft of the front wheel well. Also new for the SL is MB's direct-steer system, which was introduced on the new SLK and also recently made its way into the warmed-over CLC. Improved lighting is standard and the optional...

Filed under: Convertibles , Mercedes Benz click above for 34 more high-res pics of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL We don't know who is to blame for leaking these scrumdidlyumptious images of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL, but we're glad they did. These 34 high-res images give us a sneak peek at what Mercedes has in store for its hard-top convertible, which includes among other things an entirely new front end. The new face on the SL incorporates headlights with a more modern shape. The new eyes flank a grille with just one crossbar that's punctuated by s solid medallion bearing the iconic three-pointed star logo. New fender vents have also been added, the design of which has been aped from the more hyperbolic vents found on the McLaren SLR, but we actually like these understated gills more. A new rear apron can also be seen out back where the SL's buttocks has been freshened, as well. Inside we see the new three-spoke steering wheel and white gauges that Mercedes showed us in the...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Convertibles , Mercedes Benz click above for high res media and live images of the new SLK Mercedes Benz showed off its newly-restyled-for-'09 SLK350 (closed roof) and SLK55 AMG (open roof) in Detroit this week. While the platform remains the same, the cars feature restyled noses and tails that bring the mini roadster into line with the company's SL and SLR uber roadsters. Whether or not it's an improvement we'll leave up to you to decide. While the non-American markets will get the option of selecting an SLK200 Kompressor or SLK280 model, we will need to be content with the thoroughly revised 3.5L V6 or unchanged 5.5L V8 editions, with 305 or 360HP respectively. No matter which SLK suits your needs, you'll still get that nifty vario-top that goes from wind-in-the-hair convertible to cozy coupe in a blink. You'll also get new "direct-steer" suspension geometry, a new interior, and the company's new "NTG 2.5 generation...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Mercedes Benz , AMG It's been a regular smorgasbord for fans of Mercedes roadsters over here, with this teaser shot of the upcoming facelifted flagship SL hitting the web just a few days after Benz revealed the updated version of the smaller SLK . But while the SLK was revealed first in "ordinary" guise, the image above shows the full-fat, fire-breathing SL 65 AMG version. We already know that the facelift will feature a heavily revised front end with new headlight treatment, but from the rear three-quarter view Mercedes is enticing us with, all can also see the revised taillights, new diffuser with quad exhausts, and a subtle lip spoiler. The new SL 65 also appears to be riding on AMG's latest 19-inch five-spoke rims, similar in style to those found on Stuttgart's other earth-pounding range-topper, the Porsche 911 Turbo. With the teaser shot also comes information on the two AMG models in the new SL range: the SL 65 AMG we...

Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Mercedes Benz If this is an accurate depiction of the 2009 Mercedes CLK , all we can say is, well, we're disappointed. Not because it's a bad looking car, because it isn't. But was it Aston Martin or VW that started this trend of creating the same car in different sizes? If it was Aston, they've only got three models (for now), and they're playing in a smaller, hand-stitched leather arena, so we'll let them go. But for the mass market folks -- where did design differentiation disappear to? This could be a much smaller CL. Or a slightly smaller 2-door E-Class. Or a larger, 2-door C-Class. BMW appears to be doing the same thing with the 2009 7-Series , the renderings of which look like a massive and slightly bloated 3-Series. We have no doubt this will sell well, if it is indeed the new CLK, especially as it gives the coupe a much-needed sharpening. The creases do this car a far better service than they do the current S-Class. Still...
