Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Alfa Romeo , FIAT Any day in which we bring you news of a new Italian sports car is a good day by any account. Today we bring you news of three new sports cars under development under the Fiat group umbrella, which we needn't point out controls most of the Italian automotive industry, including Fiat, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari. First up to bat is the unique sports car which, as we reported back in March , Fiat is developing for its recently revived Abarth performance brand. Reports now suggest that the Abarth roadster would take an Elise-style approach, and could even borrow underpinnings from Lotus. Power could come from the turbo four in the Punto and 500 Abarth, mounted amidships, but unburdened by a lightweight two-seater chassis. While we wait for more news on that front, there are parallel reports of a new Lancia coupe-cabrio on the horizon. (This in addition to the rumored Aurelia flagship , anticipated for unveiling...

Cruising around town on a beautiful summer day in a classic Italian roadster may just be ours. There's just something, what the French call a certain je ne sais quoi , an indefinable quality about a vintage Alfa - found somewhere in between the exhaust note and the chrome details - that has a unique capacity to make driver and passenger forget about everything else and just enjoy the drive. Don't get us wrong, we're big fans of progress. But after spending a few hours with this beautiful 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, we're gaining a new appreciation for the phrase "they don't build 'em like they used to". Follow the jump to read why. Gallery: 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Photos Copyright (C)2008...

Filed under: Convertibles , Euro , Alfa Romeo Click on the image to enlarge and see more high-res shots of the Alfa Spider Alfa Romeo undoubtedly offers some of the most beautiful cars available. While we're anxiously awaiting the storied Italian brand's return to the U.S. market, those in Europe get some added reason to place the aging Spider on their shopping lists. The new Limited Edition model comes equipped with heated seats swathed in Italian Frau(R) leather upholstery and Alfa's Blue&Me[TM] (no, we're not making these names up) voice recognition hands-free system. Available in four color combo's and equipped with pretty 19-inch alloys, nobody is likely to kick the LE out of their garages. No power increase is present, but considering that at £25,500, all of this added goodness comes at no extra cost, we don't expect to hear too much complaining. Besides, this car is really meant to be seen in, so the zip-to-sixty sprint of just under nine seconds...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo's new Mi.To hatchback hasn't even seen the light of day yet and already it's spreading like wildfire across the automotive news media. Only days after initial details and images were released, already rumors are beginning to circulate of a convertible version. And why not? Alfa roadsters are eminently desirable, and since the Mi.To's styling was so directly inspired by the 8C Competizione's, why shouldn't it get a Spider version of its own? Anticipated to hit the market in the summer of 2009 - a year after the hatchback's official unveiling - the Mi.To convertible's design and production could very well be outsourced to one of the myriad Italian design studios desperately looking for work and experienced in convertible conversions. (Several - including Bertone and Fioravanti - have already done convertible concepts based on the Grande Punto on whose platform the Mi.To is based). Alternatively...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Videos , Supercars , Alfa Romeo With styling this beautiful, we don't need a reason to post about the Alfa 8C Spider. But it helps when Alfa Romeo puts out another of its elegant videos of the exotic sportscar driving along dramatic winding roads - like the footage of the fixed-roof 8C Competizione we've brought you before . When Alfa took the wraps off the production 8C Spider at the recently-concluded Geneva show, it played this video on the wall above. The scenery is all ocean view and the soundtrack straight out of Ocean's 11 , but as high as the stakes were for Alfa to build the impossibly gorgeous coupe and roadster, we're not sure it was such a gamble. Roll the dice and follow the jump to see for yourself. Gallery: Alfa Romeo 8C Spider Continue reading VIDEO: Alfa 8C Spider Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Convertibles , Geneva Motor Show , Supercars , Alfa Romeo Click above to view the Alfa 8C Spider in hi-res All the big rollers came out for the game this year in Geneva, but Alfa Romeo raised the stakes yet again with the unveiling of the production version of the breathtakingly curvaceous 8C Spider. Take the term "production" with a grain of salt, though, as only 500 examples of the roadster will be built, making this one of the few chances we'll have to see and bring you this exemplary piece of exotic Italian machinery first-hand. Newly-appointed CEO Luca de Meo was on hand to unveil the ivory roadster to the throngs of anxiously awaiting scribes and photogs, but that didn't stop us from shooting the 8C until our hands started to tremble. Check out our best shots in our high-resolution gallery, laid out with the thumbnails below for your viewing pleasure, along with the press release excerpt after the jump. Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Alfa Romeo Click on the images to view in high resolution Alfa fans have been a bit disappointed that the Italian automaker reportedly decided to push back the debut of the highly anticipated upcoming Junior model past the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, and Bertone's unveiling of the BAT 11 concept remains up in the air , but just the same, Alfa Romeo will have plenty to show us next week. In addition to debuting the production - and we use that term loosely, considering only 500 will be made - version of the 8C Spider , Alfa will be unveiling updated versions of its unspeakably gorgeous Brera and Spider models. Thankfully, the Italians know better than to attempt improving on a masterpiece, so Alfa hasn't messed with the award-winning design to any great extent. The wheels, brake calipers and suspension components have been replaced with lighter-weight aluminum versions, which should help address the cars' lamentably...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Supercars , Alfa Romeo Click above to view more high-res shots of the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider. Let's be honest here. There are some cars on which we report because they're new and that's what we do. But some are just pure pleasure. Now try to figure out into which category the Alfa Romeo 8C Spider falls. Although we've already seen plenty of the Alfa 8C in both coupe and roadster bodystyles, we can never get quite enough, and at this year' Geneva show, Alfa will finally be showing the production version of the 8C Spider. Technical details carry over from the luscious fixed-roof 8C Competizione, and little is expected to have changed from the concept spider unveiled at Pebble Beach in 2005 to the production version being unveiled now. As with the initial run of the coupe, only 500 spiders will be produced, so this could be our best chance to get up close and personal with the hottest model this side of Scarlett...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Alfa Romeo The rumor-mill is churning away again over the anticipated return of the Alfa Romeo Duetto . It could be a couple more years before the Duetto hits the road, but when it does, the new convertible is anticipated to target the Mazda MX-5 and form an integral part of Alfa Romeo's return to the American market. Since the Fiat Group doesn't have any new small convertibles on which to base the Duetto, the Alfa roadster is tipped to be based on the Fiat Bravo's platform. That means it will feature a range of turbocharged engines driving the front wheels, but could get the performance-oriented all-wheel-drive system reportedly being developed for the Bravo platform. The AWD system is also rumored to be featured on a pair of high performance premium hatchbacks from the Italian automaker: the Alfa 149 GTA and Lancia Delta Integrale. Filed under: Convertibles , Euro , Alfa Romeo Cyberspace is rife with speculation about a new small Alfa Romeo convertible, which could be an indicator of one of two things: either the quintessential Italian automaker has got one such spider in the works, or it's just plain old wishful thinking. Rumors suggest a revival of the Alfa Romeo Duetto, popularized by Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate , which could feature a retractable hard-top for motoring al fresco under the Tuscan sun or closed again for parking in Rome and winding through the Alps. Along the road to rehabilitation, Alfa's return to the American market will include two unspeakably beautiful convertibles: the Brera-based Spider, and the recently-confirmed convertible version of the 8C Competizione. A third convertible in the line-up would be likely to come in significantly under the price of either (not hard to do in the 8C's case considering the anticipated €185,000 sticker price that's guaranteed to climb with speculation...
