Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Crossovers/CUVs , Mazda , Misc. Auto Shows Click above for a high-res gallery of the Mazda Kazamai concept. Mazda pulled out all the awkwardly executed stops for the reveal of the Kazamai concept , including four sets of dancers, guys in neon-pink shorts on roller skates and a 40-man Russian singing troop in Soviet-style dress. We couldn't make this stuff up if we tried, but what better way to kick off our coverage of the Moscow International Auto Salon. Despite the strange theatrics, the Kazamai is one of our favorite Nagare-themed concepts since the Furai and Kabura. Then again, we're suckers for two-door crossovers. The Kazamai blends the "flow" theme we've seen on several other concepts with a more aerodynamic body and a slightly toned-down demeanor. Could this be a hint at the future of the CX-7? Don't count it out. We'll take it without the extra doors and packing the MS3's drivetrain - with all-wheel-drive. Gallery...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Videos , Mazda Click above for a high-res gallery of the Mazda Furai Of all the Nagare-themed concepts that Mazda has released over the past two years, one stands out. The Mazda Furai concept was unveiled this past January in Detroit and it walked away with our internal Best of Show award. Built around Mazda's two-year-old ALMS Courage C65 chassis and motivated by a 450-hp, three-rotor Wankel juiced by E100 Ethanol, the Furai was a concept that stood above the rest. Part of that was due to its stunning design, but mainly because it was also runner. And run it does. We've already seen video of the Furai testing at a track in Japan, and now we get to experience what its like inside during a few hot laps around the Buttonwillow circuit. Hit the jump to check it out, and make sure your speakers are turned up to 11, unless you're still at work. Filed under: Concept Cars , Economy , Paris Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Hatchbacks , Mazda Click above for a high-res gallery of the Mazda Taiki concept. Mazda is finally going to employ the styling cues shown on its Taiki , Ryuga , Hakaze and Furai show cars with a supermini concept, due to be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show . The concept aims to slot in below the Mazda2 and may be the first production model to benefit from the Nagare design theme. Other models utilizing Laurens van der Acker's swooping and sculpted lines are expected to come to production in 2010, including the redesigned Mazda3. Mazda also plans to unveil a small crossover concept at the Moscow Motor Show later this year, which will likely be based of the Ford Kuga and utilize the same Nagare DNA. This new CUV will be specifically designed for the Russian market, which Mazda maintains could overtake Germany as the largest market in Europe. But bringing this cute 'ute to the UK and the US is a possibility...

Filed under: Concept Cars , China , Etc. , Mazda So you're a customs officer in Beijing, and out of the trailer you're inspecting is hauled a... a what? The Japanese people who have accompanied it, who claim to be from Mazda, also claim that it's a concept car. Frankly, it could also be a submarine, or it might eat people -- or it could be an elaborate ruse for hauling drugs or bombs. So the officials at Beijing airport let the dogs out to sniff for, well, probably everything. Finding nothing, the Taiki was allowed to roll on to the Beijing Auto Show. Nothing in there but coffee grounds, sir, just coffee... [Source: The Tycho ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Concept Cars , Motorsports , Hatchbacks , Mazda , Misc. Auto Shows Click image for a high-res gallery of the Mazda2 Extreme On display at Mazda's booth in Melbourne is this pint-sized mudslinger-in-progress dubbed the Mazda2 Extreme. The show car began its life as a regular Mazda2 5-door, but has since been gutted, caged, and fitted with all the expected race equipment. Underhood, the engine is a work in progress that should produce around 120 hp once its upgrades are complete. Power will be sent to the front wheels via the stock transmission, and exhaust gases exit a 3-inch exhaust. A tri-tone livery, roof vent, rally wheel-and-tire package, and a substantial set of off-road lights punch up the car's visual impact. Like last year's Mazda3 MPS Extreme , the Mazda2 Extreme's suspension has been tuned by Murray Coote. Put it all together, and you have a tidy little package that you want to strap yourself into for a run through some forest stage. For added realism...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Mazda If there's anything that Vince Burlapp of Hollywood Extra fame is good for, it's random sketches with no attribution and even less information. This newest pic appears to be a possible concept for a Mazda6-based coupe, sporting many of the design elements already seen in the newly redesigned Atenza . Shifting into speculation mode, a Mazda6 coupe (or return of the MX6) seems like a great way to expand the range of Mazda's two-door offerings, while providing some competition for buyers looking at the Nissan Altima and Honda Accord coupes. We'll take that a step further and use our powers of prognostication to equip the coupe with both the 2.5-liter four and possibly the 3.7-liter V6, along with offering a Mazdaspeed version sporting the MS3's turbocharged 2.3-liter mill. We're smelling a winner, but it's all a pipedream until we hear something from Mazda. [Source: The Hollywood Extra] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Mazda click above for more images of this 2012 Mazda RX-9 concept The only car brochure we ever held on to was for a 1993 Mazda RX-7. It was the baddest car of the time -- the 300Z was four years old, the 911 had gone soft, Ferrari had that hideous 348, the C4 Corvette never really did it for us, and the lunar lander Supra hadn't landed yet. The low, tiny twin-turbo monster was it as far as we were concerned. Which is why we are always happy to read about the next coming of the RX-7. Just Put has renderings of an RX-9 concept that it says would have a Wankel powerplant of somewhere around 1.8 liters, and be more oil and fuel efficient than the current generation. Power would make it to an unidentified number of wheels via a dual-clutch 6-speed transmission and limited-slip diff. We have no idea from where these two renderings have come. They could be official images that were leaked. Their slightly low resolution supports that theory...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Economy , Japan , Hatchbacks , Mazda , Tokyo Auto Salon click above for more images of the Mazdaspeed Demio Concept Here's another one that we're very curious to read more about when Mazda gets around to issuing its sweeping Tokyo Auto Salon release. The car shown, of course, is the Demio, a.k.a. Mazda2, a.k.a one of the cool non-US market cars we'd love to see in our local showrooms. In this case, it's a fully-dressed Mazdaspeed Demio concept. In addition to the full aero package (new bumpers, spoilers, skirts, inserts, etc.), it boasts Mazdaspeed wheels, brakes, and likely some suspension upgrades. Whether there are any changes under the hood is not currently known, but it'd be a shame to look that fast with no guts to back it up. Inside, two-tone racing seats and various dress-up bits bring the Demio's cabin upmarket. We'd rather see a manual transmission instead of the show car's automatic, but if Mazda does decide to go all...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Mazda We got a small preview of the Furai Concept with a teaser photo released by Mazda a few weeks ago, but Inside Line has let the cat out of the bag with a full set of photos and more details about the car. The Furai, which translates to "sound of wind", is built on a Courage C65 chassis that was campaigned by Mazda in the 2005 ALMS season. It features a fully-running three-rotor Mazda 20B rotary engine that runs on E100 ethanol and produces around 450 horsepower. The flowing shape of the Furai was co-designed by Mazda and Swift Engineering at Mazda's design studio in Southern California. Expect the full details and tons of photos when we see the car in person at the Detroit Auto Show in just a few weeks. Until then, fix your eyes on the gallery of photos below. It's name translates from Japanese to "sound of the wind," and the car takes the design language introduced on the Nagare and applies it to what is literally a race-bred sports concept. The Furai, you see, is built atop the Courage C65 chassis that Mazda campaigned two years ago in ALMS. Power comes from a 450-horsepower three-rotor engine that runs on E100 Ethanol. As for the '09 RX-8, Mazda's announcement states only that it boasts an updated design, better quality and features, and improved handling and acceleration. The announcement now has us wondering if the spy photos that...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Mazda Click the image above for more high-res shots of the Ryuga concept. It's no surprise that Mazda's looking to radically revamp its entire product portfolio in the coming years, and the cohesive style set by the Nagare line of concepts will bring Mazda's design chief, Laurens van den Acker's vision to the road in the next few years. The first model to benefit from this new design direction will be the 2009 Mazda3, which will sport a trio of new elements that we've seen in concept form over the last year. The five-point gaping grin that's been showcased on everything from the Kabura to the Taiki will find its way onto all of Mazda's products, along with flowing creases embedded into the side panels. Like many automakers, longer wheelbases and shorter front and rear overhangs, with the wheels pushed to the outer edges of the body, will be adopted, and the Dutch designer is intent on making all of Mazda's products appear more...

Filed under: Concept Cars , LA Auto Show , Mazda Click the image above for a gallery from the show floor. So after finally hoping on the Facebook-bandwagon, we decided to check up on how Mallory McMorrow's Mazda3 concept was coming along. After shaping and molding the clay on the LA show floor for over 10 days, the 2018 Mazda3 was finally displayed. Overall, it's cues tie in nicely with the "flow" theme crafted by Franz von Holzhausen and his team who helped McMorrow hone her design. We think it's a step in the right direction, particularly from an undergrad, and we're hopeful that the 21-year old industrial design student hits the ground running once she has her degree in hand. Filed under: Concept Cars , SUVs , Paris Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Mazda The idea of an MX-5 derived CUV/SUV might seem like a bit of a stretch (literally), but Mazda's European head, James Muir, says that a concept of the rear-wheel-drive crossover is bound for the Paris Motor Show next year. The basis for the concept stems from Mazda's assertion that SUVs are going to shrink in size over the coming years with a focus on car-like driving dynamics that still have many trappings of their high-riding counterparts. Lightweight components, including high-tensile steel and smaller engines with higher outputs (read: new diesels and hopefully more turbocharged mills) should strike a balance between engaging the driver while keeping fuel-consumption and emissions in check. Muir goes on to say that an environmental focus "is the best thing that has happened to the automotive industry in 50 years," and that a city car concept might share the stage with the MX-5, or what might...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Sedans/Saloons , China , Ford , Mazda , Misc. Auto Shows click either image to view high-res galleries The ever increasing importance of the Chinese auto market is on full display this week at the 2007 Guangzhou Motor Show, and fortunately we have the Autoblog Chinese crew pounding the show floor as we speak. You can check out their coverage here (translated courtesy of Google), although for those not fluent in Chinese (like us) you'll have settle for looking at all the pretty pictures. Yesterday we told you about the debut of both the Mazda2 sedan and Ford Verve Sedan Concept at the Guangzhou show, and today we have live shots from the show floor courtesy of Autoblog Chinese. Technically these two cars are very much related, as the Verve concept is expected to inspire a production car of the same name that will be sold in the U.S. and markets abroad. That new small car will be based on the same platform as the Mazda2, and after the strong showing of four...

Filed under: Concept Cars , LA Auto Show , Mazda Click the image above for a gallery of pics. We were finally able to check out how the clay model of the Mazda Design Challenge winner was coming, and after two days of milling and scraping, Mallory McMorrow's design was beginning to materialize. Her vision of the 2018 Mazda3 began to look like an obvious choice considering how Mallory incorporated many of the "Flow" design elements that Mazda has debuted in concept form over the course of the last year, particularly the sweeping lines flanking the sides, the gaping grille and the tapered ducktail rear end. The crew of designers and modelers toiling away at the full-size concept still has another seven days to complete the project, but we've already made the trek back to our respective homes. If you make it out to the last few days of the show and have pics of the finished product, send us tip so we can check out the results and share them with the rest of you. In the meantime...
