Filed under: Concept Cars , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Maserati Click above to view high-res gallery of the IED Maserati Chicane concept Geneva has been good to Maserati. Last year the company unveiled the GranTurismo to thunderous applause, and followed up this year with the more powerful GranTurismo S . Meanwhile, the students of the Instituto Europeo di Design unveiled their Maserati Chicane concept , which won out over rival designs to win sponsorship and a spot under the bright lights of the Geneva Motor Show to show their talent to the world. We caught up with the IED graduate design students and found our cameras snapping away at the striking concept. Although certain details aren't likely to find their way onto a production Trident, with the design chiefs from Maserati and Fiat AG on the selecting jury, we wouldn't be all that surprised to see some similarities when Maserati eventually unleashes its anticipated new sportscar. Check out the video in our previous...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Alfa Romeo Bertone's not officially exhibiting at Geneva this year, as the company is going through some upheaval, but it still made a splash in Switzerland. The B.A.T. 11 , paying direct homage to the original B.A.T. concepts, was unveiled in Geneva at the AutoDesignNight event. The car was commissioned by Gary Kaberle, and you'd never know that there's an Alfa Romeo 8C hiding under the sheetmetal that's strongly evocative of the 1955 B.A.T. 5. Tapered fins and faired in wheels follow the design fundamentals laid down 50-plus years ago by Nuccio Bertone and Franco Scaglione, and the unique wheels with two layers of spokes are a 21st-century interpretation of the classic Borrani wires. Surfaces with a mix of soft and crisp forms and details still look futuristic, even while paying homage to the past. Financial woes or not, Bertone is still one of the world's premiere houses of automotive haute couture, and the B...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Renault Click above for high-res of the Renault Megane Coupe concept. Koleos, Laguna GT and Twingo RS. Those are three of the four new models which Renault was anticipated to unveil at this year's Geneva show, but right up until the end of the press conference, a big question mark hung over the identity of the fourth. The wraps have been taken off and the veils have been lifted, revealing the Megane Coupe concept. The existing Megane - along with its distinguished curved rear window - is on its way out , and Renault is assuredly working hard at a new design that will capture buyers' attention in an increasingly crowded market. But while the concept is likely a very far ways away from what the production version will end up looking like, it did grab its share of attention. Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Green , Lotus Click above for a high-res gallery of the Lotus Exige 270E Tri-Fuel While assorted activists, politicians and random individuals carry on about the spectres of global warming, imported oil, CO 2 emissions and other issues that combine to create timetable-free doomsday scenarios, there are people working on potential solutions that do not involve us driving around four-wheeled Segway scooters. That's right: the "dreaded" internal combustion engine might yet provide the answer -- or at least an answer. And because Lotus is the entity searching for the answer in this particular case, the end result might not only be green -- it looks ridiculously fun, too. The car you see here is the Geneva-bound Lotus Exige 270E Tri-Fuel concept, the successor to 2006's Exige 265E , which made 265 horses running on E85. The 270E goes a step further. Not only can it run on gasoline or ethanol...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Hatchbacks , Opel Click above for more high-res images of the Opel Meriva Concept The current Opel Meriva on sale to Europeans is a rather ho-hum affair, which is why there's actual anticipation for the Meriva Concept that will debut next week at the Geneva Motor Show . Images of the Meriva Concept have already leaked out , but Opel has made the concept's existence official by releasing the good, high-res stuff and an accompanying press release. This four-door hatch concept that's guaranteed a spot on the production line is cloaked in Opel's new design language, which means clean lines and a simple face with the brand's new grille. There are two elements of the Meriva Concept that we find interesting enough to mention again (the rest you can read in the press release after the jump), which include its rear FlexDoors and the kink in its window line. Rear suicide doors are a common feature on concept cars because they...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Renault Renault is planning to make a big splash at next week's Geneva Motor Show, with no fewer than four new models being shown at the French automaker's pavilion at the Palexpo. Those four new models don't include sister-brands Dacia , Nissan or Infiniti, but four new Renaults . We've already brought you information on the all-new Renault Koleos crossover as well as the Laguna GT and Renaultsport Twingo . The fourth premiere, however, remains a big question mark. Earlier we brought you reports that the model in question could be a new sportscar, but while Renault has confirmed that a fourth model will be shown, it has kept the identity of that model a closely-guarded secret. Filed under: Concept Cars , Economy , Hybrids/Alternative , Euro , Green , Hatchbacks , FIAT Click above to view more high-res images of the Fiat 500 Aria Concept At the upcoming Geneva auto show, Fiat will take the 500 minicar in two directions: red and green. The red we already know about: that's the 500 Abarth with a 135-hp 1.4-liter turbo four and beefed-up bodywork. But Fiat will also be showcasing the 500 Aria concept, a rolling demonstration of the green technologies that the company is developing. The concept draws on the theme laid out by the previous Fiat Panda Aria concept , which the company showed in Frankfurt. The 500 Aria, however, uses Fiat's 1.3-liter 16v Multijet diesel, a particulate filter and robotic Dualogic gearbox with start-stop technology that reduces fuel economy by 10% in the city and cuts carbon emissions down to 98g/km. The 500 Aria also employs recycled materials for the interior, low-power auxiliary systems, reduced-weight components and low-drag...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Minivans/MPVs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , GM , Opel , Vauxhall GM's European divisions are preparing to unveil their latest show car at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show next month. The Meriva Concept is Opel and Vauxhall's study for what form the next Euro minivan could take. The Meriva Concept, as previewed by the concept sketch above, draws on the previous GTC Coupe and Flextreme concepts and applies the theme to a monocab form, a segment in which Opel and Vauxhall account for one fifth of continental sales between the Zafira, Meriva and Agila MPVs. Expect the Meriva Concept to preview the direction that GM's European tall wagons will take in the near future, which could end up finding its way into a Saturn model or two on our side of the Atlantic. Press release after the jump. [Source: Vauxhall] Continue reading Geneva '08 Preview: Opel/Vauxhall Meriva Concept Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Concept Cars , Geneva Motor Show , Euro As we promised last month, Pininfarina has hit us with a teaser sketch of the upcoming Sintesi concept car . The show car, which will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this coming March, is the first concept the famous Italian design house will have shown in three years. Sintesi is Italian for "summary", and the concept ties together themes from its last two design studies: the Maserati Birdcage 75th that stopped the Geneva show in 2005, and the Nido city-car from Paris '04. The design for the new Sintesi was directed by Lowie Vermeersch, head of the company's design department. We'll look forward to bringing you more as Pininfarina doles it out, but you can check out their nifty cyber-mag in the meantime by following the link below. Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertibles , Hybrids/Alternative , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Green The Loremo sedan (LOw REsistance MObile) isn't even here yet -- it's slated for 2009 -- and already the convertible has been announced. The coupe made its debut last year at the Geneva Motor Show, and the claims were grand: 20-HP in the 2-cylinder turbodiesel LS version, 0-60 in 9 seconds, a top speed of 122-MPH, a weight of 990 pounds, a Cd of .20, and 150-computer-simulated-MPG. Of course the Loremo -- coupe or convertible -- isn't for everyone. The point of the car is to offer style (take that any way you wish), a modicum of luxury, and fuel-sipping economy at a prices between $13,000 and $18,000. The convertible would probably have a slightly higher Cd and therefore slightly worse gas mileage, but if you just get 100-MPG, that'd be all right, no? The convertible version would also probably be easier to get into than sliding over the fenders of the tilt-forward-canopy coupe...
