Filed under: Hirings/Firings , Chrysler , Ford , GM , UAW/Unions Over the last few years, huge numbers of union workers have accepted buyout packages to leave their high-paying jobs at automotive factories and office buildings. Many of those retired workers will be replaced by new hires at much lower salaries in the coming years. In fact, there could be as many as 46,000 new workers hired in Michigan alone, according to a recent 95-page report ( PDF link here ) released by the Center for Automotive Research (CAR). This report could mean good things for the troubled economy surrounding Detroit -- but it's not all roses, as the report indicates that more workers will leave through attrition than the estimated 46,000 that could be hired. Also, all of those new workers will require lots of training before they can be counted on as worthy replacements. Still, as Kristin Dziczek, an analyst from CAR says, "The bleeding will stop." Filed under: Hirings/Firings , Plants/Manufacturing , Chrysler , GM , UAW/Unions The 10-day strike between American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. and the United Auto Workers union is now threatening to idle or partially shut down 13 more GM plants as early as Monday. Although talks are underway again, even a resolution over the weekend may mean closures as it takes time to deliver inventory and ramp up production. As of now, seven assembly plants at GM have already been idled after the AA workers walked off their jobs on February 26th . American Axle supplies components to many different automakers, meaning the strike is being felt industry-wide. The strike is hitting GM particularly hard, however, as it does represent some 80% of the supplier's business. GM idled four truck plants within days. By yesterday, five GM plants, and seven suppliers were down. Chrysler may also have to idle plants in Delaware and Mexico by mid-next week if both sides don't come to an agreement...

Filed under: Hirings/Firings , Plants/Manufacturing , Chrysler , UAW/Unions The elimination of shifts is an increasingly common occurrence at assembly plants. Automakers will usually cut a shift to reduce its growing inventory of slow-selling vehicles, and Chrysler's got a few of those right now. In the days leading up to its third shift elimination, however, Chrysler's assembly plant in Belvidere, IL has become an increasingly hostile environment. Rumors of vandalism and even threats of violence have occurred, which has prompted Chrysler to call in police officers. The boys and girls in blue are patrolling the parking lots and checking workers' bags on their way into the factory. The Belvidere plant produces the Dodge Caliber, Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass, and the shift elimination that will end the assembly careers of some 1,069 UAW workers, has reportedly been planned for some time. Still, that apparently doesn't dull the sting of watching your buddies walk out the door...

Filed under: Hirings/Firings , Chrysler , Dodge , Jeep Chrysler's previous consolidation strategy, dubbed "Project Alpha," was implemented in 2004 to trim and combine dealers. All told, Chrysler was able to cut its dealer network down from 4,000 to 3,600. Not nearly enough to get outlets on par with demand. So Chrysler's co-pres, Jim Press, announced today that Project Alpha is out and Project Genesis is on the way in. According to Automotive News, as you read this, business teams are fanning out across the U.S. to negotiate with dealerships to either buy other outlets or sell their own in an effort to pair down Chrysler's bloated sales network. The plan is to get all three of the automaker's brands - Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep - under one roof, with the possibility of creating satellite dealerships and service-only facilities in outlying areas. But if all of Chrysler's wares are in plain sight of the public, won't that confuse consumers with all the product...

Filed under: Hirings/Firings , Plants/Manufacturing , Chrysler , UAW/Unions Last year Chrysler announced that it intended to significantly reduce its workforce by 2009 as part of its Recovery and Transformation plan . The exact focus of the planned reductions was not revealed at the time. Now, however, Chrysler has publicly released information detailing the locations of nearly 5,000 job cuts set to occur between now and the end of March. The layoffs will span five North American plants and the numbers consist of all hourly workers (i.e. union workers) and stem from the eliminations of extra production shifts. 900 workers will be gone from the Jefferson North Assembly Plant and 1,140 from the Sterling Heights Assembly Plant, both in the Detroit area. The Toledo North Assembly Plant loses 780 jobs and the Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario will cut 1,000 employees. The Belvedere Assembly Plant in Illinois will be excusing 1,096 workers, with around 600 of those coming from temporary positions...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Hirings/Firings , Chrysler , Dodge The new Chrysler Sebring has rightfully become the de facto whipping boy for all things wrong with design by committee. But unlike the former stalwart for unbridled criticism, the Pontiac Aztek, one of the main gripes has been the deplorable interior Chrysler saw fit to torture its customers with. According to a supplier sourced by Automotive News , a crack team of designers - dubbed "Project D" -- has been assembled to address the ills inside Chrysler's mid-sized sedan. The team is comprised of senior managers and directors who are returning as contract employees after walking out the door during the recent round of buyouts. We wish them the best of luck and hope, despite Chrysler's current cash crunch, that they can finally offer consumers some of the up-market materials found on the Sebring's closest competitors. Filed under: Hirings/Firings , Chrysler For as long as this young blog can remember, Jason Vines has been the official voice of Chrysler. Though he began at Chrysler back in 1983, Vines' professional career has seen him receive paychecks at both Nissan and Ford before returning to Chrysler in 2003 to become Vice President-Communications. Little did Vines know that he'd be on the front lines when this whole blog phenomenon hit the big time and the face of automotive journalism began to change. He's had to endure embargo breaks, late night confirmation calls and the unique personalities that exist within our cottage Web 2.0 industry for the past four years. At the end of December, however, Vines will have to deal with it no more as Chrysler has just announced his resignation, effective immediately. It appears as if his parting is on friendly terms, as Vines will stay on through the end of the month to help his replacement, Nancy Rae, formerly Senior Vice President-Human Resources...
