The Challenger was the biggest deal, followed by the Denali XT , and then a bunch of inconsequential things. We did find ourselves talking about the Suzuki Equator and the Ford Transit Connect , too. We give you our first up close and personal impressions of the Challenger SRT-8 in this podcast. We also saw the VW Routan , which certainly doesn't conjure warm, fuzzy memories of Type IIs gone by. Chevy's Traverse calls into question the usefulness of Saturn's Outlook in the product lineup. Speaking of GM badge-engineering, we got word this week that Pontiac will not be getting a Trans Am companion to the Camaro, dang. Another disappointment is the rumor that Cerberus...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Coupes , Videos , Chrysler , Dodge Chrysler has released some video of the Challenger zooming around on some desert tarmac. We think that this video is from the same shoot that produced the teaser pics we all salivated over before the Challenger was officially unveiled. With that, on to the video, after the jump. Hit the gallery for more stills, while you're at it. Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Coupes , Dodge Click above for a high-res gallery of the Dodge Challenger. During yesterday's unveiling of the Dodge Challenger , Chrysler's Vice Chairman, Jim Press, confirmed what we've already known; that Dodge expects to sell between 20,000 and 30,000 Challengers a year once production goes full-bore. All 6,400 Collectors Edition SRT8 models due to hit dealers this spring have been sold and there's a waiting list for the 2009 models. Naturally, more variants will be available next year with less powerful engines and a convertible version is supposedly in the works. According to the Freep, Press expounded on the Challenger's virtues, saying that the SRT8 has a higher top speed (170 mph) than BMW's M5. Kind of a misnomer considering that the M5's speed limiter keeps the BMW sedan below 155 mph - unleashed, it has the potential of doing 205 mph. The Freep also quoted Press as saying that the Challenger has more torque than the...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Dodge click above to enlarge and view more official '08 Dodge Challenger images None of us happen to subscribe to AutoWeek anymore, so we have to take Inside Line Senior Editor Ed Hellwig at his word that the latest issue of the weekly car rag includes another embargoed image of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 that you're not supposed to see until next week. It's a good one, though, being the first official pic to get out that shows the production derriere of the Challenger . Obvious changes include a different light bar across the back that's comprised of traditional lamps instead of the slick set up on the concept car. The rear back up lights have been combined into a single unit that now sits in the middle of the taillamp assembly, and light markers on the rear fenders have been moved down, as well. There's the new black spoiler perched on the Challenger's deck lid, which, combined with the black front lip...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Concept Cars , Podcasts , Spy Photos , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Trucks/Pickups , Audi , Chrysler , Dodge , HUMMER , Suzuki Episode #86 of the Autoblog Podcast is well-caffeineated. We spend a good bit of time talking about the excitement that's filled the Autoblog garage lately. Damon used a handily available Audi R8 as a chase car when we went to drive the Tesla Roadster, and Alex has been sampling the Subaru Tribeca and STI, as well as a rogue Volvo S80. John has been having a blissful month rocking the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero Coupe, too. There's lots of good car talk, and we take a detour into cupholder minutiae before getting to actual news. A few embargoes fell in front of the upcoming Chicago Auto Show . Car and Driver's blatant cover poll opened the door for Challenger images. Subterfuge aside, the Challenger's a knockout, despite its interior that's granted refugee status to the Sebring's trappings. Trucks will make some news at...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Dodge , Misc. Auto Shows click above for more shots of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 We're definitely geared up for the official unveiling of the 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 at the Chicago Auto Show next week. But for those who don't live near the Windy City, you can check out Chrysler's modern day muscle car in person at the 2008 Philadelphia Auto Show where it will debut simultaneously. The interesting thing is that the Challenger will debut on Wednesday, February 6th during the press preview days of the Chicago Auto Show. Chicagoans not accredited with a media badge will have to wait until the weekend to see the car in person. Philadelphians, however, will be able to view the car the very same day since the Philly show is already open to the public at that point. Considering the Royal Rumble we expect to ensue in Chicago after Chrysler invites the media up on stage to view the car, perhaps we'll have a blogger on...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show The Chicago Auto Show -- assumed by at least one journalist to be Detroit's greatest threat -- is a scant two-and-a-half weeks away. That means it's time for the first bits of info on the vehicles that will be showcased in the million-plus square feet of McCormick Hall. The not-so-sexy debuts will include the Chevrolet Traverse (or whatever it ends up being called) doing its CUV thing on GM's Lambda platform. Also on deck for its first at-bat will be Suzuki's nipped and tucked version of the Nissan Frontier, possibly called the Suzuki Equator . The party at VW will be all about its new US-market minivan, the Routan -- which we know is a made-up word, but sounds to us like some sort of primate, or maybe an equatorial vegetable. So far, the top spot for debut hotness is held by the Dodge Challenger , which has lately been photographed running around naked just about everywhere. There's a rumor -- or a guess, whichever you prefer -- that the...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Spy Photos , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Dodge click above image for more spy shots of the production Dodge Challenger Seems like one when modern day muscle car gets caught a spy photographer, they all get shot. We've already shown you new spy shots of the 2010 Ford Mustang GT today, and now we bring you two new shots (the first two in the gallery below) of the production Dodge Challenger that's been caught testing out in public. Dodge is saving the production Challenger's debut until February when it will be unveiled at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show, but as we've seen from official teaser shots , don't expect a car much different than the Challenger with which we all fell in love. This test vehicle was reportedly sporting a HEMI V8, so it's probably an SRT8 model, the same kind that will go on sale this year before the rest of the Challenger line-up arrives next year. Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Spy Photos , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Dodge Click image to see all three phonecam shots Chrysler revealed the production Dodge Challenger to dealers in Vegas last week, and while we're certain it banned all manner of cameras from the event, saying something's banned and enforcing said ban are two entirely different things. Let's just say that they failed on the enforcement part, because OntarioStreetCar.com has phonecam pics of the car, and it is very true to the concept, overall. The main changes are the presence of a b-pillar under the side glass, a small lip spoiler on the trunk of the SRT8, and a slightly extended rear bumper to meet crash test requirements. OntarioStreetCar reports that the Challenger arrives in March as a 2008 model. That first run of 5500 cars will all be 6.1L SRT8s equipped with automatic transmissions priced at $38,000. Starting in July, the MY09 Challenger will begin production, and the range will expand to include the 3.5L V6, the...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Spy Photos , Coupes , Dodge One of the Jalops was cruising the SoCal freeways freeway the other day and spotted yet another 2009 Dodge Challenger prototype on the prowl. With camera in hand, he started snapping away and upon further examination realized that this particular example had an unusual two-tone paint job. In this case, rather than the usual upper-lower color split, it looks like they spliced together parts from two different cars. While most of the car is black, a deep red is visible peeking out at the edges of the camo. And no, this Frankenstein combo won't be a standard offering after the production unit debuts at the Chicago auto show in February. Well, at least we all hope not.
