Filed under: Spy Photos , Minivans/MPVs , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Chevrolet Jalopnik has caught spy shots of a fleet -- well, two -- of the new Chevy Tacuma minivans bound for Europe. If they are indeed replacing this Chevy Tacuma as well as that aardvark masquerading as a minivan, the Uplander , then it looks like things are about to get a lot more spacious over yonder pond. Supposed to be about the size of a Mazda5, the Tacuma appears to have front-hinged rear doors, which might make it more CUV than minivan. Also, the Tacuma is also supposed to be built at GM's Hamtramck plant in Michigan. If so, that would make it bedmates with the Chevy Volt, and, as Jalopnik speculates, perhaps another good home for a hybrid drivetrain... [Source: Jalopnik ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Economy , Sedans/Saloons , Euro , Chevrolet , GM Click above for high-res gallery of the 2011 Chevy Cruze They're here! The first official pics of the 2011 Chevy Cruze have been released by General Motors, and we're not ashamed to say it - we like it. Of course, we're comparing it to the current small car in GM's lineup, the Cobalt, so the bar is pretty low. That said, GM's new small car takes the split-grille motif made famous by the Malibu and makes it more interesting with sharp creases rather than rounded corners. The front end features headlights that extend up and "point" to the A-pillars, and a strong character line running the length of the vehicle sits below a concave bend that sweeps up to meet the windows. GM claims that fit and finish of the Cruze will be world class for a small car, and that its interior will use "grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels" to improve its perceived quality. Unfortunately...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Economy , Euro , Hatchbacks , Chevrolet Testing of the Chevy Beat is officially underway, and our friends at NextAutos have procured the first set of spy shots. The camo'd mule is still sporting the short overhangs and upright silhouette of the concept, but GM decided to equip the squat city car with another set of doors to make ingress and egress easier for rear-seat passengers. Initial reports suggest that power will be provided by a 1.2-liter 16-valve DOHC inline-four, mated to either a manual or automatic gearbox. The Beat will make its production debut sometime in 2010 and will go on sale in Europe in early 2011. As previously reported , the Beat won't be making the trek to the U.S. until it meets the fed's crash-test standards, so we won't get a shot at the Beat until the next generation arrives - whenever that is. Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Euro , Green , Plants/Manufacturing , Chevrolet , Opel , Vauxhall , UK Click above for more shots of the Opel Flextreme concept When the Volt concept was first unveiled, GM was not sure how to badge European versions of the E-Flex cars. Apparently, the decision has been made and the first Euro-bound EV's from GM will be badged as Opels , with a Vauxhall version coming shortly thereafter. All three models of the E-Flex chassis will be built in Detroit atop the next-gen Delta compact car platform which was designed to carry a large lithium ion battery pack along with a range-extending engine. Though the Europeans would likely favor a diesel powerplant, it seems that the first-generation of all three E-Flex vehicles will use a gasoline-powered engine for on-the-fly battery recharging. It goes without saying that the Volt and its Euro-clones will be the most expensive vehicles built on the Delta platform, with U.S. pricing estimated to be at least $40...

Filed under: Economy , Euro , Green , Chevrolet , GM General Motors' European division has announced the development of three new engines that will provide the power consumers crave while returning higher fuel economy and lower emissions. Two turbocharged engines, ranging in output from 1.0- to 1.4-liters will between 120 hp and 129 lb.-ft. of torque, and 140 hp and 148 lb.-ft. of torque, while returning an eight-percent increase in fuel efficiency compared to their larger displacement counterparts. The duo of new engines will find their way into the new Astra and some European-market Chevys in 2010, although there's no word if either engine will make the trek across the Atlantic. Hit the jump to read up on both engines and a new, 1.6-liter CNG-powered mill that GM plans to market in Germany and Italy. Filed under: Euro , Chevrolet , GM , Opel Opel experienced an 8-percent sales dip in Europe in the first quarter, and designers at GM plan to give the storied German brand some of its mojo back by moving design and content upscale. GM says the move upmarket will result in a relatively inexpensive one- to three-percent price hike, but in return customers can expect sexier sheet metal, better packaging and more technology. The move makes sense as GM's value-conscious Chevy brand has steadily increased its presence across the Atlantic, giving the General the opportunity to push Opel up the automotive food chain. GM's plan is already underway, too, as the gorgeous Insignia is due to hit the showroom floor before the end of the year. The great part about GM's plan to give Opel luxury looks and more inventive interiors is that we'll continue to see better Saturn cars and CUVs here in the States. And that's saying a lot, considering Saturn already looks fresher than most brands...

Filed under: Euro , Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Hatchbacks , Chevrolet Oh dear. It seems the marketing team for Chevrolet in Greece has just one thing on its collective mind, and suffice it to say, it's not the Matiz. Granted, the girls in these ads we've been seeing on the 'net lately are infinitely more enticing than the budget hatchback, but still... enough is enough. That won't keep us from watching the commercial, though, or from minding that we can't understand what's being said. Hey, it's all Greek to us, and it's all good. Check out the video after the jump , and the one that came before it , which we think better bridges the language gap. Filed under: Tuners , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Euro , Chevrolet Click above for high-res gallery of the Corvette Competition The Chevy Corvette trails only the Ford Mustang in number of special editions offered from the factory and by third-party tuners. Aside from the Z06 and ZR1 , GM has also offered Vette-o-philes the Victory Edition (Euro only), 427 Limited Edition Z06 , the Ron Fellows ALMS GT1 Champion Corvette Z06 , and many Indy 500 Pace Car special editions over the years. And that's just from the factory. Check out Callaway and Lingenfelter for an even longer list of special Vettes. GM of Europe has announced one more special Corvette to add to the list. Along with the aforementioned Victory Edition, GM will also be offering Europeans the Corvette Competition, which supposedly celebrates the new racing season that kicked off in mid-March with the 12 Hours of Sebring . Despite that race being held on American soil as part of the American Le Mans Series, the Corvette Competition...

Filed under: Euro , Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Chevrolet Click above to view video You may not want to watch this at the office if you work in a puritanical professional environment, but we swear there's a car in this commercial somewhere. We just don't seem to notice it, no matter how many times we watch the video. (Believe us, we've tried.) The commercial airs on Greek television supposedly to advertise the newly redesigned Chevrolet Matiz . The first-generation Matiz started life as a Daewoo, the Korean carmaker that General Motors took over and now uses its cars across Europe with Chevrolet badges. The original design was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro's Italdesign as the Lucciola, originally proposed to Fiat for a new Cinquecento. (We're glad Fiat passed.) The ad, as you can see for yourself in the video after the jump, relies heavily on the old adage "sex sells". But while the commercial certainly makes us want something, like the Nissan ad of which...

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Hatchbacks , Chevrolet Click above for a high-res gallery of the Chevrolet Aveo Three-Door. What more can be said about the Euro-market Chevy Aveo three-door? Fortunately, not much. The new Aveo gets the reworked front fascia, complete with Anime eyes and gaping maw, while the shallow accent lines that flank the doors angle slightly higher to conform to the three-door's shorter shape. Aside from the much-despised fake fender vents, it's not a bad looking runabout. And with a choice of either an 84 hp, 1.2-liter or a 101 hp 1.4-liter four driving the front wheels, what it lacks in style it makes up for in fuel economy. Hit the jump to read Chevy's press release on the new Aveo three-door. Gallery: 2008 Chevy Aveo 3-Door (Europe) Continue reading Geneva 2008: Chevrolet Aveo 3-Door Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Hatchbacks , Chevrolet , GM Click image for photo gallery Chevy has completed the Aveo facelifts and will introduce the updated Euro-market 3-door at the Geneva Motor Show next month. You can sum it up like this: it's like the Aveo5 , minus the doors for second-row passengers. The rear windows pop open for ventilation and power is supplied by an 84-horse 1.2L or a step-up 1.4L that generates 101 hp. The interior styling carries over, of course, as do the exterior visuals that share the Aveo 5-door's gigantic grille, fake fender vents , and the like. If this were offered in the US, it might make a nice alternative to the Yaris Liftback -- also a 3-door. Keep one eye on the sky to watch for those flying pigs. Filed under: Economy , Euro , Chevrolet , GM , Toyota , Volvo General Motor's European arm has decided that it won't jump feet-first into the micro-car segment with Smart, and more recently Toyota and Volkswagen. Speaking with Automotive News Europe, GM's Euro-veep Carl-Peter Forster said that, "These specialized urban vehicles have a limited market." True enough, but it's a market that stands to go through a growth spurt in the coming years, and GM's decision to opt out of providing a competitive product might be a short-sited move. That said, GM already sells the Chevy-branded, Korean-built Matiz abroad, which - to a certain extent - already fills that niche. But with the Toyota iQ expected to sell 80,000 units in Europe in 2009 and VW's up! coming the following year, the Opel Trixx concept (pictured) that originally debuted in Geneva in '04 might look like an appealing product if sales of the iQ and up! go through the roof. Filed under: Minivans/MPVs , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Chevrolet , GM , Saturn While GM's new labor contract with the UAW has been out for some time , it took some snooping on the part of Automotive News to find out that one of the models set to be produced at the General's Hamtramck, Mich. plant will be a new seven-seat people mover. The imaginative codename for the new model is the MPV-7, which will find inspiration from the next generation Opel Zafira. According to AN 's sources, it will sport a more manly exterior, with a box shape to make room for a "unique interior." The minivan replacement will carry a Chevrolet emblem at first, with a Saturn-badged variant to follow. Pricing is expected to be in the upper-$20k to $30,000 realm and GM plans to sell 100,000 units annually, both in the U.S. and Europe. If Ford decides to bring over a version of its S-Max from the UK, this could be the beginning of a competitive segment here in the States. [Source: Automotive News...

Filed under: Minivans/MPVs , Euro , Plants/Manufacturing , Chevrolet , GM , Opel With a weakening US dollar and more competitive union contracts, exporting vehicles to Europe from the US is looking more and more plausible with each passing day. General Motors may soon be utilizing its under-worked US plants to pull off just such a thing, and the Opel Zafira could well be the first model built in the States for Euro consumption. Automobilwoche in Europe is reporting that Opel worker's council head Klaus Franz called a US-built Zafira a "distinct possibility", and that Chevrolet is planning on building a similar model for the U.S. market in mid-2009. If GM can pull off building a vehicle in the States destined for Europe, it would strengthen its plant utilization in North America while also increasing European capacity. While there is only a slight chance this will happen, we think it would be a huge stride towards profitability in the General's largest market. [Source: Automotive News -...
