Filed under: Aftermarket , Time Warp , Auction Action , Porsche Click above to view more of the Porsche 959 Speedster Not all German supercars are the same. For instance, not every Teutonic exotic bred the plethora of derivatives that the Mercedes SLR McLaren has. Case in point, the Porsche 959. There was no 722 version, no roadster and certainly no chop-top speedster. But that's where the aftermarket comes into the picture. Well, sorta. What you see here is not a 959 supercar with the roof hacked off. Nor is it an original 356, either. All it appears to be is a kit car combining the retro styling of the original Porsche with the front and rear ends of the 959. The hybrid concoction may have filled a niche for a modern throwback to the original 356 just as the first-generation Boxster was coming to market, but where that leaves this creation now is up to debate. While we can't say that the end result is a work of art, it certainly is... original. Follow the link for the auction...

Filed under: Car Buying , Gadgets , Auction Action , Etc. Just in time for Pebble Beach, Cars That Matter is rolling out a price guide that can give you the current collector value for hundreds of cars on your java-enabled smartphone or PDA. If you're a collector you've probably researched the catalog and car you want to bid on before you take your bidder number. But what if a 1968 Checker Wagon in good condition and with the Factory Taxi option -- just the one you've been looking for -- is added at the last minute? How do you know how much to pay? The guide gives you Checker prices broken down in three tiers for the sedan and the wagon, ranging from $7,200 to $20,500. It also lets you know to add another $3,500 for the Factory Taxi option, and a further 20-percent if it were a 1970-71 with the V8. It's the kind of tool that might help you never pay too much for a classic car at auction again. Or, at the very least, you'll know ahead of time that you're about to...

Filed under: Coupes , Auction Action , Chrysler , Dodge Click above for gallery of Challenger SRT8 #0001 in its new home The very first production 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 has already been built and shipped to an AZ dealership, but it's not for sale. The first Challenger was won at auction by none other than Barrett-Jackson CEO Craig Jackson, and the world-famous auctioneer can pick up his prized $400,000 pony car at Ed Moses Dodge in Scottsdale, AZ whenever he's ready. Dodge Challenger SRT8 numero uno is completely loaded, black with a gray stripe down the center, and the plastic condoms have yet to be removed from the steering wheel and driver's seat. Jackson wasn't the only high-profile celebrity to snap up an early Challenger SRT8, either. As you read on Autoblog earlier, Jay Leno received Challenger #0002 this week, and the comedian/car nut has already parked his new toy at The Tonight Show headquarters in Burbank, CA. Check our gallery below for pics of the Challenger...

Filed under: Car Buying , Sports/GTs , Auction Action , Pontiac Click above for a high-res gallery of the 1964 Pontiac Banshee The very cool 1964 Pontiac Banshee prototype is being auctioned off, again. Back in November of last year, the super-cool and svelte vehicle was put up on eBay with a Buy-It-Now price of $1.3 million. It didn't sell, so it's back up ... with a cool $2 hundred-grand tacked onto the price. Powered by Pontiac's OHC straight-six engine, the Banshee was intended to compete with the just-introduced Ford Mustang. As an extremely unique piece of automotive history, there are surely a few people out there with very deep pockets who would like to get their hands on the car that GM thought was too close to Corvette territory. Because GM had already committed to the 'Vette as its halo-car, it squashed the Banshee program before John De Lorean, then head of Pontiac, was able to get the Banshee into production. Look closely and you'll note that many of the...

Filed under: Time Warp , Auction Action , Etc. , Supercars , Ford The Barrett-Jackson auctions have seen no shortage celebrity cars cross the block, but is the sale of a pair of KITTs at the upcoming Palm Beach event a sign that the series has already succumbed to its crushing craptasticality ? Given the movie's ratings, that's unlikely. It seems, rather, that we're going to be stuck with NBC's awful retread of a not-very-good original, and these auctions appear to have been in the works for a while. The proceeds from the sale of auction lots 665 and 665.1 -- a "normal" and an Attack Mode KITT -- will benefit Ford's Salute to Education charity. While we can all hope that the new Knight Rider either gets better - at least to be as bad as the original would be laudable - or is put down mercifully, Ford's scholarship program will be the big winner when someone ponies up for these ponycars. Filed under: Time Warp , Auction Action , Etc. , Cadillac , Celebrities It's not the actual car referenced in the little chestnut " Freeway of Love ," but this Mary-Kay pink 2008 Cadillac CTS signed by Aretha Franklin is hitting the auction block in Los Angeles today. The funds will benefit MusiCares, an organization set up by the Recording Academy (the Grammy people) to provide humanitarian support to musicians that need help. That doesn't mean getting a speech therapist for Ozzy, it's more like helping folks still trying to rebuild their lives after Hurricane Katrina. The event is part of the MusicCares 2008 Person of the Year tribute that will honor Aretha Franklin, and we'd much rather have a pink CTS than a Cimmaron, which was the entry-level Caddy during the song's day on the charts. We'd take it in black, and load R-E-S-P-E-C-T onto the audio system's hard drive immediately. [Source: MusiCares via Inside Line] Read | Permalink | Email this |...

Filed under: Auction Action , Ferrari This year in Scottsdale, Arizona, Barrett-Jackson was garnering as much attention as ever, selling off all manner of first-edition American muscle cars and Monster Garage monstrosities . But it was Gooding & Company that set the big records in its first year at Scottsdale, selling 64 cars for a total over $21 million. 90% went for more than their estimated values, and the average sale price was over $330k. No fewer than seven cars sold for over $1 million each, including an Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 which brought $1.54 million, as well as a Packard Individual Custom Eight Convertible, a 1963 Ferrari 400 Superamerica and a Duesenberg Model J "Clear-Vision" Sedan. The big news, however, was the yellow 1959 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder. As we pointed out in preview of RM Auctions' upcoming event in Maranello , Ferrari only built 100 examples of the iconic 250 GT California Spyder - 50 long wheelbase and 50 short - making this a highly...

Filed under: Aftermarket , Concept Cars , Tuners , Auction Action Click on the image to view in our high-resolution image gallery Monied fans of Monster Garage gathered this week in Scottsdale, Arizona for the opportunity to own a piece of their favorite television show when the Barrett-Jackson auction house put 42 of the hot rod program's creations under the hammer. Among the vehicles put up for auction were a Ferrari fitted with a pasta-maker , a flying Panoz Esperante , a Mustang lawn mower , a Porsche modified to collect golf balls , and an assortment of dragsters and custom lowriders. All in all, 42 custom street rods went on the block. Most of them, as could be expected, were American iron, but a modified Rolls-Royce , a 1999 Champ Car open-wheeler and even a steam-powered speed boat , all modified towards various aesthetic and functional ends, were rolled out for the event. We've got images of all 42 custom rides in our gallery with descriptions of what you're looking...

Filed under: Time Warp , Auction Action , Commercial Trucks Glomming onto a Federal program in the 1970s meant to spur the development of more accessible buses, DeLorean Motor Corporation saw a potential revenue stream. Not that the DMC 80 had anything to do with their now cult-classic sports car, it wouldn't have even been built by DMC. An example of how badge engineering and pimping platforms has been going on forever in the automotive business, DeLorean was essentially planning on affixing the DMC badge to buses from Germany's FFG. Like the DMC-12, success was not to be had. The Urban Mass Transit Administration's (now Federal Transit Administration) Transbus program was cancelled in 1981 after several years of floundering. DMC couldn't continue to devote resources to the effort, so they abandoned the licensing effort and scrapped a proposal for a bus assembly plant in New York, too. While DeLorean may be little more than a passing curiosity in automotive history, the...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Auction Action , Dodge You might recall the speculation that surrounded Dodge's new CUV and what name it would take when it graced the show stand in Frankfurt. Sources claimed that the trucklet would carry a "Crew" badge, but when the wraps came off, the Journey was born. So much for reliable sources, right? Wrong. Brenda Priddy actually has in her possession a "Crew" nameplate that was acquired through her normal mischievous means, confirming the rumor that the name was changed just two weeks before its reveal in Germany. While it's an interesting story, what's even cooler is that Brenda will be auctioning off the one-of-a-kind "Crew" badge, some camouflage that covered the prototype and a handful of other espionage-related kit with all the proceeds going to a charity of your choice. You can read Brenda's full description of the items after the jump and place your bids over at eBay . Continue reading Priddy and Co...

Filed under: Time Warp , Auction Action , Etc. , Volkswagen , Lifestyle click above image for more pics of the VW Toaster Van You're supposed to get baked in the VW bus, not toasted, but whatever. Volkswagen originally had these promotional toasters done up for its Japanese operation. Buy a new VW or bring your VeeDub in for an inspection, get a toaster. While supplies last, of course. There were only 5,000 produced, and fans of splitties and air-cooled VWs in general are rightfully nutso for them. We're not sure if the 100-volt wiring for the Japanese consumer will be okay on the slightly higher voltage here in the US, but if you torch your house after spending at least $250 on the toaster, please don't hold us responsible. Just in time for Christmas, the ultimate culinary delight for Volkswagen fans. What better way to augment a nice Frühstück of Hazelnussomeletten than with some VW-logo toast? Filed under: SUVs , Auction Action , Etc. , Jeep Here's a familiar morning routine now that the weather's turning colder: start car, set heat on high, retreat inside to finish coffee. There's plenty of debate for and against the practice of warming up by idling, but the unfortunate story of this ZJ could bolster the argument for just getting in and going. eBayer buickonly had his 1996 Grand Cherokee swiped from his driveway one morning as it sat innocently trying to generate some warmth. What had been a nice clean vehicle ended up having its nose bashed in and was abandoned after becoming wedged between two trees. The coniferous atomic wedgie sheared off an exterior door handle, so there's only three working doors, and a Lincoln Town Car donated its proboscis to some crude rhinoplasty, but at least it's got lights out front again. Naturally, his wife refuses to ride in it, especially with it's rattle-can chic paint job, so buickonly's trying to unload it. If...
