Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Aston Martin , Maybach , Mercedes-Benz , Rumormill It sounds like a match made in heaven. A new duo of sedans styled by Aston Martin with Mercedes-Benz engineering prowess propping them up. Assuming that these two automakers can get their next super-sedans bolted together well enough, the first sedan from the recently-revived Lagonda brand and the next Maybach may be jointly designed by the two companies, which just recently began collaborating with each other. Early reports indicate that the two premium saloons would be based on the latest S-Class chassis architecture, with the Maybach brand getting the most luxurious accouterments and the Lagonda holding the sporty end of the stick. Powertrain options for these two luxury vehicles would come from Daimler as a revised version of the V12 engine that currently powers the Maybach limos and which may even by hybridized. The jointly developed super saloons would theoretically cut the development time and budget...

Filed under: Aston Martin , Mercedes-Benz In today's chaotic automotive industry, if you're not merging , divesting , or collaborating , then you're just not trying. Both Aston Martin and Mercedes are only about 18 months removed from their respective divorces from Ford and Chrysler, and now the two luxury automakers are looking to shack up with one another. This time, though, they'll skip wedded bliss in favor of a limited agreement between two consensual companies. CAR gave us some details in on the limited partnership in its September issue, and now the British rag is making with the details. Make the jump for the skinny. Filed under: Aston Martin , Maybach , Mercedes-Benz Project Alligator. That's the internal code-name for a potential collaboration between Mercedes and Aston Martin on everything from drivetrains to platforms. CAR 's September issue gets into all the details, which includes such tasty nuggest as the possible use of AMG's 6.2-liter V8 in the next Vantage, porting over Mercedes' future eight-speed auto 'box into Astons, sharing platforms between both automaker's high-end models (think SL and beyond), cooperating on the development of diesels and hybrids, and using Aston's future products to keep Maybach alive and maybe even help the wayward ultra-luxury brand thrive with up to five new models. But it gets even bigger. A collaboration between the two could place M-B in a good position to buy Aston Martin if its new owners, including Prodrive's David Richards, decide to exit the automaking biz. As CAR points out, however, the only potential loser from Project...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Plants/Manufacturing , Supercars , Aston Martin , Mercedes Benz According to Autocar , rumors of Mercedes-Benz purchasing a major stake in Aston Martin don't hold water. Aston's current owners are reportedly not interested in selling all or part of their British sportscar marque to anybody at this time. The possibility still exists that Aston will go public within the next five-or-so years, meaning that just about anyone could own a piece of the tasty Aston Martin pie in the future. Dreams of a beautifully styled Aston Martin powered by a glorious AMG engine are still possible, though, as Aston's current owners have been in talks with multiple other automakers over parts-sharing opportunities. Major technical components could be bought or developed in collaboration with a company that's got plenty of R&D acumen, and MB/AMG certainly qualifies as such. Although a possible synergy does exist between the two brands, nothing beyond collaboration...

Filed under: Plants/Manufacturing , Supercars , Aston Martin , Mercedes Benz , AMG Click above for a high-res gallery of the Aston Martin N400 V8 Vantage. What began as a rumor that Mercedes-Benz would begin supplying Aston Martin with engines has evolved into a full-blown partnership that may include both automakers co-developing platforms and technology. The newest report comes courtesy of Autocar, suggesting that M-B is considering purchasing a stake in Aston Martin and the Kuwaiti Investment Authority would in turn receive a seven-percent slice of the Daimler AG pie. The partnership would make sense on several levels. Aston Martin, which is a small fish in a very large pool, will need to purchase major components from mainstream suppliers once its ties with Ford are officially severed. Imagine AMG-levels of power nestled inside Aston's sensuous sheet metal. Yum. But the partnership wouldn't be one sided. Recent reports coming out of Germany say that M-B is looking to employ...

Filed under: Supercars , Aston Martin , DaimlerChrysler , Mercedes Benz Daimler and Dar, the Kuwait-based investment firm that holds a 50-percent stake in Aston Martin, are reportedly in talks to explore investment opportunities between the two automakers. The folks from Mercedes-Benz' parent company paid a visit to Dar on Tuesday, and the Aston Martin contingent is expected to spend some quality time with its investment firm in the next few weeks, as well. While the term "investment opportunities" is a far cry from joint vehicle development, we'll leave the pontification about what the outcome of these talks will be up to you in the comments below. However, we'll start the rampant speculation with Aston Martin's engineers working on the chassis development of Mercedes' new SLC supercar .
