  • SEMA 2008: Top 10 Nissan GT-Rs

In addition to the numerous Nissan tuners, it seemed that nearly every wheel and tire manufacturer had Godzilla manning its booth. We were determined to see all the different variations, and did our best to photograph everyone we came across. We've assembled our ten favorite GT-Rs , and put together a huge gallery of all the GT-Rs at this year's SEMA show.   • SEMA 2008: Branew Nissan GT-R wearing 23-inch wheels

    Filed under: Aftermarket , SEMA , Nissan Click above for high-res gallery of the Branew Nissan GT-R One thing we've learned from SEMA over the past few years is that no car is safe from excessively large wheels. With the Nissan GT-R currently being perhaps the hottest sports car on the market, it was inevitable that we would see one rolling with huge rims. As it happened, we hadn't even entered the building before we spotted this GT-R among the DUB group of cars with blingy "superchrome" 23-inch rims. The rims are part of a kit from Branew, which also offers a body kit and center exhaust kit. It looks like there's still room in the wheel well, so we'll be on the look out for the first company to stuff 24-inchers onto the GT-R.   • GT-R tuning update: HKS GT570 package

Serious Nissan GT-R tuners aren't coming out of the woodwork - yet - but one of Japan's largest aftermarket firms has thrown its hat into the ring, and to good effect. HKS will begin offering its GT570 kit to consumers in Japan later this year (no word on U.S. distribution) and as it's name implies, output is getting close to the 600 hp mark. The package includes new wastegate actuators for the stock turbos and an electronic boost controller, along with aluminum intercooler piping, silicon hose couplers and straight pipes that replace the stock catalytic converters, reducing back pressure, but negating the GT-R's road-legal status. All of those tweaks add up to a total of - you guessed it - 570 PS, or 562 hp and 540 lb.-ft. of torque at the wheels.   • Wald International preparing Nissan GT-R kit

Whether it's the Lexus IS-F or the Mercedes-Benz CL , the Japanese tuner loves to create a bold look with vents, wings and wheels. The tuner recently turned its attention to the Nissan GT-R, and while we don't have official information on the car, the photos offer a good look at what the package will include. A vented front fascia and splitter, side skirts, rear fender flares, a rear diffuser, carbon fiber rear spoiler and 22-inch wheels all lend to the more aggressive look. We actually like the majority of the body kit, although we'd prefer the rear fender flares to be the same color as the body, and the larger wheels probably don't do much for the performance of the car.   • NISMO releases Club Sport package for R35 GT-R

NISMO has finally released all the details on its line of upgrades for the R35 Nissan GT-R, and per usual, there's good news and bad news. On the positive side, the parts are the typical blend of OEM quality and fitment, with a focus on tighter handling and weight reduction. The Club Sport tuning package includes the Chassis pack made up of race-tuned Bilstein Damptronic adjustable dampers sheathed in 18.5kg/mm (front) and 9.6 kg/mm (rear) springs. The combination of rock-hard coils and adjustable damping at both low and high speeds should make the GT-R stickier through the corners and more stable while bombing through a fast sweeper. Rounding out the handling package is a set of Rays forged aluminum wheels, sized 20x9.5-inches in front (+45mm offset) and 20x10.5-inches (+25mm offset) in the rear, and wrapped in Bridgestone RE070R run-flats, sized 225/40 and...
  • Cobb Tuning gives the GT-R a serious bump in power

For those of you lucky enough to own a GT-R and not content with its performance out of the box, the $995 AccessPort will reflash the ECU to any one of six different tuning levels. There are three levels each for Stage 1 and Stage 2. Stage 1 can get you up to 63 additional ponies and 70 lb.-ft. of additional twist, while Stage 2 can boost the numbers by 70 and 90 respectively. The AccessPort can also save your stock ECU data and reflash it when you decide you're finished with all that extra gumption. According to a GT-R owner who tried it out , you can be blowing past all those regular GT-Rs in less than an hour. And that's not all: you can store multiple engine mapping programs, remove trouble codes, install reduced-power valet and economy modes, and update maps over the Internet.   • Nissan GT-R Spec V delayed, 'Evolution' model due in the interim

The word from Japan's BestCar magazine is that Nissan has delayed the launch of the GT-R Spec V in Japan from this fall to sometime later this year or early 2009. The reason for the delay hasn't been divulged, but as a stop-gap measure, Nissan will be releasing an Evolution or S-Tune version fitted with several of the parts developed by NISMO and fitted on the race-spec version of the GT-R that campaigned in Tokachi 24-hour enduro . The launch of the Evolution/S-Tune model will coincide with the release of NISMO's line of performance parts , due out later this month, and will include suspension upgrades, new aero parts, wheels and tires, along with a revised ECU and a new exhaust system.   • Nissan GT-R tuning packages from NISMO coming Aug. 20th

    Filed under: Aftermarket , Motorsports , Tuners , Nissan Nissan's motorsports arm has been hard at work developing parts for the GT-R, and on August 20th, R35 owners in Japan will get their first taste of NISMO's efforts. Tuning packages - ranging from street to circuit kits - will be offered in either comprehensive combinations or ala carte, and will include wheels and tires, carbon fiber aero parts, exhaust systems, tweaked ECUs and upgraded cooling kits. All the parts have already undergone rigorous testing, primarily during NISMO/MOTUL's campaign of a race-prepped R35 GT-R in the Tokachi 24 hour endurance race .   • Nissan bringing tuned R35 GT-R to Tokachi 24-hour race

    Filed under: Aftermarket , Motorsports , Tuners , Nissan Nissan's motorsports arm, NISMO, will bring a race-prepared GT-R to the Tokachi 24-hour race on July 20th and 21st equipped with NISMO tuning parts that will be available to consumers later this summer. The car is being prepped by both NISMO and MOTUL, the Japanese French specialty oil manufacturer, and the modified GT-R will benefit from a special blend of the brand's high-performance oil. The GT-R won't be packing additional ponies, with power still pegged at 480 PS (473 hp) and 434 lb.-ft. of torque. However, the curb weight of the racer has dropped from over 3,800 pounds to 3,527 pounds. Masami Kageyama (former Formula Nippon racer and SuperGT pilot) and Tetsuya Tanaka (2008 Super GT GT300 driver) will be handling the tuned GT-R around the track at Tokachi. Since retiring from competition, he hasn't let the automaker forget his gratitude. He does so through his aftermarket parts company and tuning shop, Stillen. Stillen's core market consists of the Nissan/Infiniti enthusiast, while Ford fans round a close second. For the past 12 years the Costa Mesa, CA facility has hosted an annual customer appreciation open house aimed at giving a little something back to those who keep things running.   • GT-R tuning update: Amuse breaks 600 hp, tranny woes at MCR

    Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Supercars , Nissan With all the news surrounding the Nissan GT-R V-Spec , the progress on the Godzilla tuning front has been largely overlooked. According to a recent article in Japan's BestCar magazine, the Amuse team has broken the 600 hp mark (at the crank) with a combination of a high-flow exhaust and a tweaked ECU. There were no details on how the GT-R's computer was hacked, but Amuse was able to up the boost to 18 psi, resulting in an increase in output to 602.73 hp and 576.95 lb.-ft. of torque. However, tuners are beginning to question how the stock gearbox will hold up under the strain of additional output. MCR, which brought out its GT-R for filming of Hot Version 93, has been exacting its own brand of punishment on its tuned GT-R and is worried how long the transmission will last. Despite a slightly rocky start, the aftermarket in Japan has fully embraced the R35 Nissan GT-R. We've already reported on the trials and tribulations owners have faced when trying to throw on some new hoops or attempting to get past the Nissan-imposed 111-mph speed limiter, but as we suspected, both issues have been resolved post haste by the auto-obsessives across the Pacific. HKS has begun selling a standalone speed-limiter defeat that plugs into the ECU harness and removes the 180 km/h governor, and, unlike other solutions from MINE'S and Amuse, it doesn't involve reflashing the ECU.   • Nissan GT-R owners manual warns of messing with perfection

    Filed under: Aftermarket , Coupes , Japan , Supercars , Nissan We just experienced firsthand the unbridled awesomeness contained within the body shell of Nissan's new über-Mechagodzilla, the GT-R. Apparently, Nissan is a true believer in the car's kickassedness and would prefer if owner's didn't eff it up with superfluous wings, flares and other accoutrements that have no hope of making the car better than it already is. Those who have imported a JDM GT-R to the United States will find this page in their owner's manual that warns in no uncertain terms against pulling a Paul Walker on their GT-R. Just leave the car be, folks. You can't do better than what Nissan already did, so don't try. UPDATE: Before you even ask, yes, you can get this on a T-shirt.   • Nissan GT-R can't take aftermarket wheels, unapproved race tracks are out

The conversation centered on the roadblocks Nissan has put in place to stimy high speeds and limit modifications to the GT-R. We've previously reported on how the GPS system fitted to the GT-R would remove the 111 mph (180 kph) speed limiter when the car arrives at a track, but according to Niikura, it will only work on pre-approved racetracks. However, the GPS sensor doesn't automatically remove the limiter by itself, it has to be manually changed by navigating through a series of menus on the GT-R's touch screen. While having to go to a Nissan-approved track is daft in its own right, it's even worse when you leave.     Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Japan , Nissan Nissan's in-house tuning arm, Nismo, is looking to expand its reach both in its home market and abroad, beginning with an S-Tune package for, of all things, the Tiida. Beyond the Tiida (Versa here in the States), Nissan plans to offer Nismo parts and professional tuning at every one of its dealerships in Japan, with plans to expand the network across the globe. That could mean that you'll be able to hit up your local Nissan dealer for a Nismo exhaust and intake, have it installed while you're there and possibly get an ECU reflash to make better use of the parts. It's the wave of the future and you can't deny getting factory-approved and installed parts that would provide piece of mind while keeping your warranty intact.
