  • Officially Official: 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI coming Stateside this summer

Filed under: Euro , Hatchbacks , Volkswagen 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI - Click above for a high-res gallery The 2009 Volkswagen Golf GTI (Mark VI) is upon us, and as suspected, the thinly-veiled "concept" shown in Paris is an exact duplicate of the production model we'll be getting in the States this summer. With redesigned front and rear fascias, artfully sculpted haunches and Scirocco-inspired headlamps, the Mark VI is a subtle evolution of the outgoing model that lends a bit more aggression to the three- and five-door hatch. Power is provided by a tweaked and turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four putting out 210 horsepower (10 hp more than its predecessor) and 206 lb-ft of torque beginning at 1,800 rpm. The run to 60 mph comes in at 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 149 mph. A six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch gearbox are available, along with a standard sport suspension, DCC adaptive damping (with settings for Normal, Sport and Comfort) and an XDS electronic differential...
  • REPORT: Infiniti M hybrid coming in 2010

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Sedans/Saloons , Green , Infiniti , Nissan Nissan and Infiniti have been lagging when it comes to bringing gas-electric models to market, with the exception of the Altima Hybrid which relies on a system borrowed from Toyota. According to a report by the Nikkei business daily in Japan, that's set to change when Infiniti begins offering a hybrid version of the M sedan in 2010. As previewed in August , the system differs from "conventional" hybrids on the market by using advanced lithium-ion batteries that boast more power and quicker recharge times. Additionally, the parallel hybrid system is equipped with one electric motor and two clutches to allow the gas engine and electric motor to drive the rear wheels simultaneously. Acceleration and response is expected to be more performance oriented - previewed in the Essence concept at the Geneva Motor Show - while a trio of driving modes will allow the M to run on electric power at low speeds, a...
  • Mercedes-Benz teases the next E63 AMG

Filed under: Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Sports/GTs , Euro , Mercedes-Benz , Misc. Auto Shows , AMG The new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has yet to be introduced (we're guessing it'll make an appearance in New York next month), but the readers of Germany's Sport Auto magazine are going to have a shot at winning the new über-sedan as part of the sweepstakes that accompanies the buff book's annual reader's choice awards. In honor of the occasion, Mercedes has pulled a Lutz and given a quick upskirt peek at the front end. What's it look like? Well, as you can see, it's pretty much what you'd expect from an AMG ride: updated fascia, aero kit, big split-spoke wheels that show off bigger, upgraded brakes, etc. The normally-aspirated 6.2 (+ .1 for old-times' sake) liter V8 belts out 525 horsepower. Bring money. You know you're gonna need it. We'll have more for you on the new AMG E-Class as soon as more deets become available. [Source: Sport Auto via MotorWard...
  • Direct-injected VQ engines coming from Infiniti, Q45 successor on the ropes?

Filed under: Coupes , Sedans/Saloons , SUVs , Infiniti Infiniti Essence Concept - Click above for a high-res gallery According to Car and Driver , Infiniti is readying a direct-injection system for its 3.7-liter V6 and plans to implement it on the refreshed G37 coupe and sedan before the redesigned G arrives in the next three years. A variant of the twin-turbocharged, 3.7-liter direct-injected V6 originally shown in the Essence concept will likely appear in the redesigned M - due in 2010 - and will reportedly put out between 340 and 350 horsepower, but it will not be fitted with the duo of turbos. While Infiniti recognizes that it could use a successor to the Q45 (the company's slow-selling full-size sedan last roamed U.S. showrooms in 2006) to compete with the likes of Audi, BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, the project may be stifled by the floundering economy. Infiniti dealers were evidently shown a concept in Japan earlier this year, assumed to be the next Q, which was essentially a...

  • Acura concept teased ahead of New York unveiling

Filed under: Concept Cars , New York Auto Show , Crossovers/CUVs , Acura Click above to enlarge The crew at Acura have released a single teaser of a new concept due to arrive at next month's New York Auto Show . The darkened overhead image doesn't show much, but the angular front and rear fenders, single set of door handles and sloping roofline gives us a glimpse of the BMW X6-fighting crossover spied in the past . Acura has confirmed plans to add an all new niche model into its line-up for 2010 as it continues to strive for Tier 1 status. If it's a four-door coupe-like CUV, some might question the logic, but with two crossover architectures already available, it might be a low-cost way of matching BMW model-for-model. • REPORT: Volkswagen to sell two versions of Polo in U.S. in 2011

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Hatchbacks , Volkswagen 2010 Volkswagen Polo - Click above for a high-res gallery Volkswagen has every intention of selling its compact Polo in the States, but we won't be getting the 2010 model that debut at last month's Geneva Motor Show . Volkswagen of America CEO, Stefan Jacoby, says the fifth-generation Polo is still too small for the American market, so instead, VW is developing two versions for the U.S. - a small sedan and a five-door version - each featuring a longer wheelbase and a slightly taller roofline. The sedan variant will be smaller than the current Jetta, while the four-door wagon will take aim at the Honda Fit. According to Jacoby, "It's more like a cross between a compact minivan and a hatchback." Sounds like a Fit competitor to us. Pricing is still a long way off, but Jacoby admitted that the "sweet spot" is somewhere between $13,000 and $15,000. If VW wants to hit that price point, the U.S.-market Polo will...
  • 2014 Audi S4 and S5 to get turbo'd four-pots, massive weight reduction

Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Sedans/Saloons , Wagons/Estates , Audi Audi Sportback Concept - Click above for a high-res gallery Car and Driver sat down with Audi's global head of product engineering, Michael Dick, to discuss the future of the automaker's offerings and how it plans to tackle the ongoing issue of weight. While all automakers cite consumer demand and government regulation as one of the major reasons overall vehicle weight has skyrocketed in the last 20 years, Audi is actively pursuing its "smaller-is-better credo." To that end, the automaker currently has a next-generation A5 prototype running around that's 880 pounds lighter than the current car. Dick told C&D that the mule is using an increased amount of aluminum, magnesium and high-strength steel to reduce mass, and says while the current TT is 69% aluminum, the next A6 (due in 2011 or 2012) will have even more, and the next A4/A5/S4/S5 will feature more still when they arrive in 2014....
