It looks like it is going to take more than just a ‘little’ terrorist attack to call off the Lisbon-Dakar rally in Mauritania. Last week four French tourists and four Mauritanian soldiers were shot and killed in Mauritania allegedly by the Al Qaeda. After the attack many people assumed that the rally would be canceled – but after a meeting held by the chief of security for the rally and several government authorities in Mauritania they have decided to move ahead. Last year’s rally had two stages canceled due to security concerns regarding Algerian rebels. This year’s rally is set to depart from Lisbon, Portugal, on January 5, passing through Mauritania on January 11 en route to the finish line in Dakar, Senegal, on January 20, covering a total of 9000km (5600 miles).
